The Sacrifices under the Old Covenant were unable to provide forgiveness of sins

The accomplishments and shortcomings of the Law - Hebrews 10:1-4

Hebrews 10:1–4 NIV
The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins. It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
Law defined sin
Law required sacrifice to remind us of the severity of sin - Sin requires death
Law looked forward to the perfect sacrifice
The Law did not bring forgiveness
The Law did not cleanse

There was a futility in the offering of sacrifices- Hebrews 10:11

Hebrews 10:11 NIV
Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.

The Sacrifice of Jesus is a superior sacrifice

Christ’s sacrifice cleanses us - Hebrews 9:12-14

Hebrews 9:12–14 NIV
He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!
The Sacrifices were a symbol of obedience to God
Christ’s sacrifice accomplished our cleansing

Christ’s sacrifice perfected our forgiveness - Hebrews 10:11-14

Hebrews 10:11–14 NIV
Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
Christ’s sacrifice is once for all
Christ’s sacrifice makes us perfect before a holy God

The impact of Christ’s Sacrifice

Christ’s death cleanses our Conscience - Heb 9:14

Hebrews 9:14 NIV
How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!

Christ’s death provides for our eternal redemption - Hebrews 9:12

Hebrews 9:12 NIV
He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.

Christ’s death provides access too God - Hebrews 10:19-22

Hebrews 10:19–22 NIV
Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
Reasons for Confidence
Christ opened a way - The Most Holy Place had been off limits
Christ is our High Priest
Christ has cleansed our conscience

Christ’s sacrifice did away with sin’s penalty of death - Hebrews 9:26-28

Hebrews 9:26–28 NIV
Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
