Philippians 2:5-11
Philippians 2:5-11

Summarize last time
Last week we looked at the words spoken by Jacob over his sons.
We specifically focused on the prophetic words spoken to Judah.
These words point to the promise of Jesus our Messiah.
We did not get a chance to finish the thought last time.
We are going to start in Genesis.
The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.
We did begin to touch on this verse last time.
I explained scepter.
It serves as a symbol of authority to lead.
As Israel was delivered from bondage in Egypt, the tribe of Judah led the way through the wilderness (Numbers 10:14).
But the scepter also symbolizes the authority to uphold.
Meaning:

1. The One who holds the scepter (Jesus) has both the authority to lead His people, but also to bring forth the intention of His words.
Clearly this verse again is a reference to Messiah.
King David was from the line of Judah (2 Samuel 2:1-11; 5:4-5).
And it was the promise of the Lord to establish the authority of the house of David forever (2 Samuel 7:12-16).
It was from the line of David that we are given the promise of Jesus.
A King whose reign has no end.
The verse goes on to say that the ruler’s staff will not depart from between His feet.
The rulers staff is another term meaning scepter.
The phrase shall not depart from between His feet is alluding to the extent of His authority.
This ruler will exert authority wherever He treads.
Again this is a reffrence to Messiah.

2. The authority of Jesus will go forth throughout all the heavens and the earth as He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.
A promise given through the prophet Isaiah and fulfilled by Jesus.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
A prophecy of our Messiah, Savior and King.
We thrive under the authority of Jesus.
Again it is His authority that will have no end.
Read verse 10 again
The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.
Look at the words UNTIL HE TO WHOM IT BELONGS SHALL COME.
Depending on the translation of the Bible you are using, your Bible may not say this complete phrase.
I typically speak from the NIV because that is the Bible most people here at MZR use.
In this translation this phrase should appear.
But I typically use the NASB translation to study.
In the NASB and a few other translations, rather that stating until He whom it belongs shall come, there is simply the word Shilo.
The NASB says:

“The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
UNTIL SHILOH COMES.
What does this mean.

Read Gesenius Hebrew Lexicon definition of the word Shilo:
ADD DEfinitION below and to the slide
Until Shiloh comes.
A way to render this word is:
Shilo: Until the One to which authority belongs will bring tranquility or rest.
Clearly these verses are talking about our Messiah.
Until He to whom it belongs returns.
Until He to whom authority belongs returns to establish tranquility.
This verse points to the return of our Lord.
When He will return to us to finally destroy the enemies of God.
To sit upon His throne in Jerusalem.
AMEN!
Turn to Philippians 2:5-11
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
In these verses Paul talks about a promise that is for the now but also for the not yet.

3. Philippians 2:5-11- A promise for the now but also for the not yet.
We can claim the promise of Jesus right now.
Trusting in His mercy and grace to Save.
Jesus who chose to be a servant of all who would believe in Him.
Humbled Himself to walk among us.
4. Jesus humbled Himself to go to the cross to pay the price of your sin.
And by His own authority rose form the grave to give us confidence in the promise of eternal life with Him.
For this reason God has given Him the Name above all names.
And under the authroity of Jesus every knee will bow.
And every tongue will confess that Jesus is LORD!
To the glory of God, Jesus is Lord.
This is a promise we can claim in the now.

5. Philippians 2:5-11- Paul also tells of us a day that is yet to come.
6. The day when Jesus our Messiah will return.
Paul tells us to look forward to that day.
It will be a day to rejoice because
The day when Jesus our Messiah will return.
Paul tells us to look forward to that day.
It will be a day to rejoice because
At this time, there will be those who humble themselves before the Lord.
There will be those who bow before the Lord in worship of Him by choice.
There will also be some who out of rebellion will bow, but not by choice.
They will bow to the Lordship of Jesus as enemies of His authority.
They will confess that Jesus is Lord but not by choice.
It will be done in submission to His ultimate authority.
These verses are not talking about universal salvation for all.
They are talking about those who choose to recognize Jesus as both Savior and Lord.
Those who humble themselves by choice under His authority.
But the verses are also talking about the enemies of God.
Those who will be forced to bow out of the sheer weight of His glory.
All will bow.
Some out of reverence.
Some out of rebellion.
Now is the time to choose.
Now is the time to put your faith in Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
Do Not harden your heart toward the mercy of God.
DO not be like those who will bow out of rebellion under the judgement of Almighty God.
Back to Genesis 49:10
The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.

7. Genesis 49:10- This verse points both to the One who will rule in authority, but it also points to a promise.
Until Shilo comes.
Or in the NIV: Until He to whom it belongs shall come.
When Jesus returns every knee will bow.
He will rule and reign as the rulers staff has not nor will it ever depart from His grasp.
We can trust in His authority to place all of His enemies under His feet.
But as I said this verse celebrates both the one who has authority but it also gives us a promise.
When Shilo returns.

8. When the One to whom authority belongs returns and with Him will He bring peace.
He will bring rest to those who bow to Him as Savior and Lord.
Close here: we will finish up chapter 49 of Genesis next time.
Benediction: Philippians 2:12-13
So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
