Title: The Lord is One
Key Passage: Deuteronomy 6:4-5
Big Idea: There is only one true God, and He calls for our full devotion.
I. Introduction: The Power of One
Illustration: Imagine a sports team where everyone does their own thing. No teamwork, no unity. They won't win—not because they're untalented, but because they aren't unified.
Transition: Unity matters. Just like a team needs one leader and one mission, our lives are built upon one foundational truth: there is only one God.
II. The Truth of One God
Scripture: "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one." – Deuteronomy 6:4
Context: The Shema was Israel's daily reminder of the singular truth in a world full of false gods.
Point 1: Our God isn't just one option among many; He's the only God.
R.C. Sproul: "The issue is not whether we worship, but whom we worship."
Point 2: The truth of one God calls for exclusive devotion.
Adrian Rogers: "If Jesus is not Lord of all, then He is not Lord at all."
III. Loving the One True God
Scripture: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength." – Deuteronomy 6:5
Point 1: True love demands our full commitment; God wants all of us, not part of us.
C.S. Lewis: "Christ says, 'Give me all. I don’t want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: I want you. I have not come to torment your natural self, but to kill it...I will give you Myself: my own will shall become yours.'"
Point 2: Loving God means making Him the priority in our decisions, actions, and desires.
Illustration: Imagine telling your closest friend, "I'm mostly loyal to you." Partial devotion isn't devotion at all.
IV. How Do We Live Like There is One God?
1. Remove the idols
"You shall have no other gods before me." (Exodus 20:3)
What distracts you from fully loving God?
2. Seek God first
"Seek first the kingdom of God..." (Matthew 6:33)
Choose God first in every part of your life.
3. Live boldly for Him
Let your life reflect the conviction that there's only one true God.
C.S. Lewis: "When we Christians behave badly, or fail to behave well, we are making Christianity unbelievable to the outside world."
V. Conclusion: A Call to Devotion
Challenge Questions:
What's competing for your devotion right now?
What do you need to surrender to fully love God with your entire being?
Encouragement: Only the one true God is worthy of your whole heart. He alone satisfies.
Adrian Rogers: "The heart of the human problem is the problem of the human heart."
Prayer Response: Invite students to reflect and write down what idol they need to surrender. Pray collectively for strength and commitment to wholeheartedly follow the one true God.
