Introduction:
Isaiah 40:31 NKJV
31 But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

1. Waiting on the Lord is a spiritual discipline.

To the 21 century believer silence is scary.
We do not understand silence. Silence scares us.
with the advent the modern smart phone we are silence is less and less. so then we are comfortable with it less.
I am one who goes to sleep with the TV on I cant get my brain to shut off.
Sometimes it’s the same with waiting on God.
I learned to take a 3x5 card into those times with me so that when something comes to mind that really is important I can right it down.
When I say it is a discipline one of the reasons I say that is the natural mind goes to racing when silence comes.
Let’s try this: lets practice waiting on the Lord for 2:00 minutes. Ok, let’s be honest, how did it go?
Allow time and space for a response. write it gown on a 5X7 card.
The scripture is clear about training ourselves in godliness
1 Timothy 4:6–11 NKJV
6 If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed. 7 But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness. 8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance. 10 For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. 11 These things command and teach.
do you see the encouragement to exercise your self toward godliness? (Verse 7).
We are not waiting to catch the Charismatic Coup, we are excising ourselves in godliness.

2. Teaching my mind to wait on the Lord will renew my strength.

This is the “A” clause in our text Is 40:31.
Isaiah 40:31 NKJV
31 But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.
Eagles fly at an altitude that is above the storms of life. the fly above the rain, above the thunder, above the lightning, above the winds.
when an eagle is attacked by a bird that is bigger than it the first thing it does is to go up! The attacking bird cannot breath the air at the same altitude that it’s attacker!
Waiting on the Lord allows us to come up.
How does it do that? I am so glad you asked!
One of the things it has done for me is taught me to be slow of speech.
James 1:19 NKJV
19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

3. If we never wait we never hear the still small voice.

1 Kings 19:11–12 NKJV
11 Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
