Good morning
Let’s Pray
Today we are diving into the prodigal son....okay not a full dive but diving into repentance leading to restoration
we may....probably will come back here at some point in the future because there is a lot of meat here but for this morning we are taking a focused look at repentance and restoration
I am going to read the entire scripture then go back and break it down

Luke 15:11–32

________________________________________

11 And he said, A certain man had two sons: 12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living. 13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. 14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. 15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. 17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, 19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. 20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. 21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. 22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: 23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. 25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound. 28 And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him. 29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: 30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. 31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. 32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

Sin Leads To Actions We Regret

Luke 15:11–12

“And he said, A certain man had two sons: And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.”
The son told the father I wish you were dead
i want my inheritance now
all he wanted from his father was money
the father gives it to him
sin leads to actions we regret

Sin Always Takes You Further Than You Are Willing To Go

Luke 15:13–16

________________________________________

“And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.”
At first the young man probably felt like a rockstar
women
alcohol
possibly drugs
riotous living from a Greek adverb meaning dissolutely...this is the only time it is used in the Bible
Websters 1828 defines dissolutely as loosely....wantonly.... or debauchery, without restraint
You name it he did it all while blowing his money....his fathers money
he blew it all
he had nothing left
then a famine hits and he was in trouble
he was
homeless
hungry
and helpless
all in a country far from home
sin always takes you further than you are willing to go
I have yet to meet someone addicted to drugs or alcohol or porn that ever said I couldn’t wait to lose my job
i couldnt wait to lose my family
i couldnt wait to be strung out
i couldnt wait to lose everything
sin costs you everything everytime!!!!!
So the young man is broke
homeless
hungry
desperate
he gets hired to feed pigs
now this young man is a Jew
swine were unclean
this is the worst situation he could have ended up in
I remember when i was young
19 or 20 I think
I lived with my mom and Kenny still
was working
full of pride
full of riotous living
they said our house our rules
so i left
I moved in with a friend that I graduated with who still lived with his dad and younger brother in a small apartment
it didnt take long to realize what i gave up to due to my sin
sin always takes you further than you are willing to go

Awakening Leads To Repentance

________________________________________

Luke 15:17–19

________________________________________

“And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.”
the young man finally woke up
he said
here i am a Jew sitting in a pig pen wanting to eat their scraps because i am starving
i suck
i have messed up horribly
i have nothing
i am dying
my fathers servants have leftovers
i have pig scraps
I am not worthy of being a son but maybe a hired servant
anyone who has come to repentance leading to salvation has been here
some relate to the son because you were very similar but all had to be awoken by Holy Spirit to their situation apart from God
Christians when we sin.....we must arrive here as well
you have to come to a true realization of your sin and position because of that sin
the son made a plan and acted on the plan and headed home

Compassion Is The Response To Repentance And Leads To Restoration

________________________________________

Luke 15:20–24

________________________________________

“And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.”
Notice the position of the father
waiting and watching
His son said I wish you were dead
i want my inheritance now
He ran away
he wasted his fathers money
he diminished the family name
did all the wrong in the world
yet the father was waiting and watching
then the day came
the father saw the son way off in the distance
the father didnt want to destroy him
the father didnt want to punish him
the father was moved with compassion and he ran
In Jewish tradition all of that was a no no
even the running
he ran to meet his son
he kissed his son
he put a rob on his son
he put a ring....the family ring.....on his son....that signified he was accepting him back as a son not a servant
he was overjoyed to see his son
That is how God is when a sinner repents
that is how God is when Christians repent
Full of compassion and overjoyed

Repentance Leading To Restoration Can Cause Jealously and Anger In Others

Luke 15:25–30

________________________________________

“Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing. And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound. And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him. And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.”
We wont spend much time here today but the older brother is mad
how in the world can dad be so dumb
my brother just wasted our money on
prostitutes
wild living
and dad throws him a party
i have always been here
i have always done right
He never threw a party for me
that is your natural human selfish reaction
me
me
me
Pride
How dare they
we have to be so careful here
repentance should always bring us joy not anger

In God You Have Everything

Luke 15:31–32

________________________________________

“And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.”
The father reminds the older son
you have all that i have
you always have and you always will
you never left relationship
we have always been together
be happy in me
your brother was dead and is now alive
that should make you rejoice
I want to look at your attitude towards repentance both in you and others

Blessed

________________________________________

Psalm 32:1–2

________________________________________

Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no guile.”
You are blessed in forgiveness
look at your standing after forgiveness
Lord imputeth not your iniquity
as if you never sinned
so why doe your past haunt you
if you are saved it is gone
the Lord doesnt impute it against you
not blessed for lack of punishment but blessed because of right standing with God
relationship
as a mature Christian that is what you must seek!!!!

Sorry State

________________________________________

Psalm 32:3–4

________________________________________

“When I kept silence, my bones waxed old Through my roaring all the day long. For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: My moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.”
Great description of sinful state prior to confession and repentance
bones waxing old...wasting away
God’s hand heavy upon you
conviction
conviction can be very heavy
conviction could be an overwhelming feeling
Dry as a summer drought
painful
stressful
zapping all the life and energy out of you

Repentance And Confession = Forgiveness and Restoration

________________________________________

Psalm 32:5–6

________________________________________

“I acknowledged my sin unto thee, And mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; And thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah. For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: Surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.”
You have to stop hiding your sin
You must confess your sin
again the main reason for the cross and paper and hammer and nails
confess
give it to God and that is where it resides!!!!!

Hiding Place

________________________________________

Psalm 32:7

________________________________________

“Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.”
Is God truly your hiding place
is he who you turn to in good times and bad
when you are in trouble do you seek Him or the world
Do you seek Him or
drugs
alcohol
vapes
cigarettes
sex
food
people
fill in the blank

God Leads The Forgiven

________________________________________

Psalm 32:8–10

________________________________________

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. Be ye not as the horse, Or as the mule, which have no understanding: Whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, Lest they come near unto thee. Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: But he that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about.”
God will always lead you but never force you
He loves you
He has the best....HIS best planned for you
Do you follow
He will never force you to follow Him

Be Glad-Rejoice

________________________________________

Psalm 32:11

________________________________________

“Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous: And shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.”
Look around here at CCC
there are several here who have been delivered
who have sought repentance and now are restored in Jesus!!!!!!!!
When I think of someone who has been restored and is glad and rejoicing in all things i think of Kizzi
she is full of gladness
she is always rejoicing
she is constantly shouting for joy
Kizzi and Joshua you both are such an encouragement and testimony
Praise Jesus
Where do you stand
Are you the prodigal son and need repentance and restoration in your life
are you the father and need to be moved with compassion at someones repentance and offer restoration
are you the older son and mad that repentance has lead to restoration in someone else life
are you glad and rejoicing in repentance and restoration both yours and others
The time is now to come and deal with whatever God has laid on your heart this morning
