Intro

knowing my limits
the words of a non Hebrew who worships YHWH
a few lines in proverbs and a poem from David about circumstances and limitations

Agur’s poem

1-4
the way to wisdom is admitting that I know nothing in comparison to God
that I am foolish in comparison and depend on him
what he does and has done are far beyond me
5-9
every word of God proves true
tell me the truth and give me only what I need
tell me of the words of God and give me what God has to offer me
Like when Jesus says in Mark 10 from last weeks sermon, we ought to be like children
not innocent, but dependent on God
numerical sayings
things too wonderful to understand and are worth pondering

Job’s Conversation with God

38:5
similar language to Agur
God is the one who did all of these things
asking the rhetorical question
no man could do what God has done and it is that way on purpose
we go with God if we want to achieve something worthwhile in this life

A Psalm of David

73
a lament about the injustice of man and the justice of God
I cannot set everything right in this life
God will set everything right in the end

Application

pray that in all things you will rely on God and not on your own understanding or someone else’s
