17:20-37
Interprets all the travel parables so far. This gives us a solid baseline to look back and see the purpose of all of the parables.
We are to see Israel like the people of violence before the flood or the people of Sodom. Judgement is coming.
There is a refuge (a door) into which he calls his disciples to pass. The cost of discipleship is division and ridicule, but it is a division or cutting off from the doomed masses.
These are all extremely practical for them. Within a generation this flood physically comes and those who were watching and were willing to separate and leave from Jerusalem were spared.
32 Remember Lot’s wife. 33 Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it.
What is the message to the Pharisees?
Sign of Jonah
The Blood of Abel to Zechariah - Blood cry out theme, City of blood, generation of blood. Cosmic sin, flood is coming.
47 Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 So you are witnesses and you consent to the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’ 50 so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation. 52 Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”
First city of Blood
Who’s line are you from
Noah (rest) and the flood
Entering into the door, the kingdom and the rest
Key to enter the door of the ark is knowledge of God given in the law? They took it away by perverting it.
Jerusalem - city that kills the prophets
34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!
Parable of the Lost Sheep
7 “Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 8 As I live, declares the Lord God, surely because my sheep have become a prey, and my sheep have become food for all the wild beasts, since there was no shepherd, and because my shepherds have not searched for my sheep, but the shepherds have fed themselves, and have not fed my sheep, 9 therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 10 Thus says the Lord God, Behold, I am against the shepherds, and I will require my sheep at their hand and put a stop to their feeding the sheep. No longer shall the shepherds feed themselves. I will rescue my sheep from their mouths, that they may not be food for them. 11 “For thus says the Lord God: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. 12 As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness.
Parable of the Lost Coin
Hard to understand unless you’re poor
Parable of the Lost Son
kingdom of God is in the midst of you
Judgement is upon you
What is the message to the crowds
Do you not see the flood coming? Hypocrites
54 He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?
Enter through the narrow door
22 He went on his way through towns and villages, teaching and journeying toward Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to him, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, 24 “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.
Hate your father and mother
25 Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
Bear A cross
Jesus is warning of the flood, calling them to the door of the ark, but warning them that it will be a path of suffering.
What he says to disciples
Beware the pharisees hypocrisy
Be ready for action
The coming of the Son of Man.
What it means - meant something in 70ad. We can extrapolate that to ideas about now.

We can take that and follow him into refuge.
