There are times when we expect things to be simple, easy, straight forward.
All of us would love for everything we want, plan, and work for to result in success and reward.
Sometimes we have seasons that are AWESOME!
MOUNTAIN TOP MOMENTS.
Like Peter, James, and John experienced.
GLORY
And then you come down the mountain only to find a mess.
This is what these disciples experienced.
Mount Hermon vs Mount Sinai
Moses and Joshua went up a mountain and met with Jesus… They had an amazing mountain top experience only to come down the mountain and find the disciples in a mess!
Jesus and His boys went up and met with Moses… They had also experienced an amazing mountain top experience only to come down the mountain and find the disciples in a mess!
Think for a moment…
What have your disappointments been?
Who’s let you down?
How have you responded?
When hopes are dashed to pieces, we are wired to look for healing and restoration.
We recognize we have a need. But, we don’t always see what the true need is. So we run to things we think will help.
Arguing
Blame
Anger
Pleasure - Sinai’s Disappointment
But, these disappointments are always meant to point us to what you will always need.
We see this here in this story…
#1

You Always Need Jesus

Mark 9:14-19
Notice there is conflict
Mark 9:14 ESV
14 And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them.
The people in conflict…
the disciples
a large crowd
scribes
Circle the words
Next, notice what the whole crowd does.
Mark 9:15–16 ESV
15 And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. 16 And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?”
Mark is helping us understand what is really happening…
Mark 9:17 ESV
17 And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute.
Circle “to you”
The person brought their son to who??
Who were they seeking?
Mark 9:18 CSB
18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”
Okay, who did the person originally come to see?
Who did he then settle for?
Circle “I asked your disciples…”
Now, here, we just read that, the disciples tried to do something good for this boy, but they were not able to accomplish it…
They weren’t doing something bad. They were doing something that was normal for them.
Mark 6:7 ESV
7 And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.
Jesus sent them out with authority over unclean Spirits
Mark 6:13 ESV
13 And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.
Here’s their mindset
_It worked in that situation, so it should work in this situation_
Check out how Jesus responds…
Mark 9:19 CSB
19 He replied to them, “You unbelieving generation, how long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me.”
Here’s what I see…
_Sometimes, there are situations only Jesus can fix_
You might have something right now that is troubling you. Hurting you.
Will you have the humility to recognize that only Jesus can fix it?
What you always need...
_You always need Jesus_
I know that sounds so cliche…
But thankfully, the rest of this text shows us how we can find the help we need from Jesus…
#2

You Always Need Faith

Mark 9:19-27
Lets start again with Jesus response in verse 19
Mark 9:19 CSB
19 He replied to them, “You unbelieving generation, how long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me.”
He calls them an “unbelieving generation”
This is everyone, the disciples, the crowd, and the scribes.
For some reason, their faith is lacking…
Mark 9:20 ESV
20 And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth.
Okay…
Get this…
Here, the demonic spirit has more faith than the people….
IT KNOWS WHO JESUS IS…
Mark 9:21 ESV
21 And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood.
This situation seems more and more impossible to fix…
Mark 9:22 ESV
22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
Does Jesus have compassion?
Do you think Jesus wants to help you?
Sometimes a lack of faith isn’t just a lack in Jesus’ ability…
_Sometimes its a lack of faith in His heart for us…_
Mark 9:23 ESV
23 And Jesus said to him, “ ‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.”
Have you seen Wreck-It Ralph?
Jesus is pulling a Fix-It Felix
“I CAN FIX IT”
Look at it again…
Mark 9:23 ESV
23 And Jesus said to him, “ ‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.”
What is the object Jesus is saying we should believe?
Himself
Mark 9:24 ESV
24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”
I love this man’s honesty!!
Mark 9:25 ESV
25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”
Notice the first few words… “Jesus saw that a crowd came running together…”
Jesus desires to do things humbly and in agreement with the Father’s will
Circumstances were changing fast…
Circumstances and the Father’s will dictate how and when Jesus will fix something.
Mark 9:26 ESV
26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.”
BOOM ROASTED!
Jesus wins!
Mark 9:27 ESV
27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.
Here’s what I see Jesus calling us to believe
_Jesus submits to His Father’s plan for what needs fixing_
_Jesus is able to fix anything_
_Jesus is willing to fix anything_
What you always need...
You always need Jesus
_You always need faith_
#3

You Always Need Prayer

Mark 9:28 ESV
28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?”
Circle “privately”
Notice,
In order to fully process and understand everything they just witnessed, they needed to…
_GET ALONE WITH JESUS_
When is the last time you got alone with Jesus?
Do you think getting alone with Jesus is weird?
It is alone with Jesus where we learn of Him and even win the battles we are facing!
Mark 9:28–29 ESV
28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29 And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”
“This kind” = the type of demonic spirit. HUGE. MAIN POINT YO.
There are demonic powers at work that will only be driven out by PRAYER.
I do not want you guys to just gloss over this…
DEMONS ARE REAL!
DEMONS ARE WORKING TO STOP YOU FROM KNOWING AND EXPERIENCING GOD.
Some of you are SUPER SUPER SPIRITUALLY DRY.
Perhaps you have unwillingly and unknowingly invited demonic forces into your life that keep you oppressed and keep you disconnected from Jesus.
THE BIBLE IS SOO SOO GOOD TO US. IT LAYS IT OUT…
This passage is warning us about the treacherous world.
What you always need...
You always need Jesus
You always need faith
_You always need prayer_
CLOSING
I want everyone in this room to experience what its like for Jesus to not just transform a situation… But to have a transformed heart.
With whatever needs you have or situations you are in. Whatever demonic oppression you are experiencing…
Before being able to fully engage Jesus in faith and prayer to see breakthrough, you need to open your heart to His transforming power…
Forgiving others
Humbling yourself in expressing your need for Him
Surrendering to the Father’s will for whatever situation you are in.
Lets hit the lights…
Call To Response
Who do you need to forgive?
“Father, I forgive ______”
Do you really and truly believe that you need Jesus?
“Lord, I need you…”
Are you surrendered to whatever God’s will might be for your current situation?
“Lord, I surrender to your will”
