As we come to a conclusion in our series of lesson on “God’s Plan of Salvation,” we find ourselves looking then at “Salvation & Faithfulness.” Being adopted into the family of God (Romans 8:15) is only first step toward’s eternal salvation. Yes, when you obey the gospel, have your sins washed away, and are added to the family of God it is the most exciting time in your life, but that is when Satan comes roaring back like the lion he is striving to devour you. Jesus warned of this in the parable of the sower and the seed. Notice what Jesus says concerning the first two groups of people that obey the gospel in Matthew 13:18-21.
Matthew 13:18–21 NKJV
18 “Therefore hear the parable of the sower: 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside. 20 But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.
Notice Satan comes and “snatches away what was sown” and he also “causes tribulation and persecution” to come to those who belong to God as clearly seen in the book of Job.
This is why Paul would write to the church at Philippi in Philippians 2:12
Philippians 2:12 NKJV
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling
When we obey the gospel our journey towards inheriting an eternity in the presence of God only begins, so what is expected of those that have become children of God? There are two main things God expects that everything else falls under.
The first is, God expects us to be loyal to him.
Luke 10:27 NKJV
27 So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ”
Matthew 6:33 NKJV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
The second is, God expects us to work hard for him in obedience to him.
Ephesians 2:10 NKJV
10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
James 2:17 ESV
17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
James 1:22–25 ESV
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
Once we obey the gospel and are added to the family of God, Satan will strive to devour us (1 Peter 5:8). However, if we put our complete hope and trust in God the Father, Son, and Spirit and work with all our zeal for our God we will spend an eternity with our God in heaven one day.
James 1:12 ESV
12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
