John 4:39–42 NKJV
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of His own word. 42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”
The title of this mornings Sermon is; “Come Meet a Man...”
Introduction:
This morning we are going to look at the life of a Samaritan woman. We are going to look at a religious schism between Jews and Samaritans.
We are going to consider the life of this woman at the well and see what we can learn from her about sin and suffering in the life before relationship with Jesus.
We are going to look at the effect that this encounter with Jesus had on the woman’s life.
We are going to look at how Christ can use use us to reach those who need to be reached.
We are going to see why we hold a service on Good Friday.

Before we get into today’s topic there are a few things we need to know about The Samaritan woman’s and her previous encounter with Jesus.

The Samaritans where considered less then because they where in the “northern kingdom” which fell before the southern kingdom.

This meant that they were not a part of the Babylonian captivity.

Because they were a part of the Assyrian captivity they where not a part of the Babylonian captivity. The Babylonian captivity is a major part of the Hebrew national identity. This is one of the reasons the Jews of Jesus day saw them as less then.

King Sargon of Assyrians put captives from other lands to keep the land stable and the Hebrews married women from others lands so now that makes them less Jewish as a people even though they are faithful adherents to the faith 2 Kings 17:24.

Because of staying in the land during the Babylonian captivity, because the Samarians were inter married, the Hebrews saw them as less than.

The sixth hour is noon.

John 4:9 NKJV
9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

This verse sums up what I have just told you.

This woman still is not getting that Jesus is not talking about water, He is talking about salvation. I wonder if her last name was Nichols.

The woman comes at noon this is our first clue that she is rejected or at least feels that way. Early in the morning is when you go to draw water. Early in the morning is when you draw water, not at noon when it will evaporate on your journey home. This leads me to believe that at very lest she felt rejected.

Jesus had a divine appointment with this woman. Jesus came to sit at the well for her and her alone.

Jesus speaks directly to her physical need so that He can help her with her spiritual problem.

John 4:15 NKJV
15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”
She asked Jesus for running water after He offered her living water.
John 4:16 NKJV
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
Jesus goes to the source of her rejection by her own people.
John 4:17–18 NKJV
17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”
Next Jesus and this woman have a conversation about worship.
The end of this conversation quoted often.
John 4:21–26 NKJV
21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”

1. Jesus had a divine appointment.

John 4:4 NKJV
4 But He needed to go through Samaria.
Jesus left to avoid the conflict before its time but He needed to go through Samaria.

Why did He need to go through Samaria because He needed to deal with the rejection the Hebrew people put upon the Samarians.

The Samarians where rejected because they did not have the same testimony as the rest of Isreal.

We who worship the Lord in Spirit and in truth must be careful not to see people as less then because they do not suffer from chemical addiction.

People who do not suffer from chemical addiction still suffer from sin that society thinks makes them less then.

This leaves these people open to at least two things:

Secrets

Fear

How many of us no the paralyzing power of Secret sin and fear?

How many of us know the pain of rejection that comes from that sin.

I have good news.

Jesus still has divine appointments with people who have been rejected.

He is not likely to show up at someones kitchen sink, so, how is He going to keep His appointment?

Through you and I.

2. We need to see ourselves as what we are; tools in the hand of the master. He has divine appointments set up for you.

The woman at the well is a Samaritan-rejected.
She is a woman-not exactly equal in that day and age-rejected.
it is likely she has been left by six men- rejected by the men who left her and the women in her community- Rejected and Rejected.
She was just the right amount of rejection to be evangelized by God in the flesh- Acceptance that washes away all rejection.

3. The Lord is calling us to continue the in the work He started when He was here. We do it the same way the Samaritan woman did it, by telling the people The Lord sends to us about what He did for you.

Lets look again at the Text for today.
The text tells us that she went and told the people of the city what Jesus has done for her.
Remember this is the same woman that took her water pots to be filled at noon because she wanted to ovoid the rejection and ridicule that she has been under for what I feel like was a long time.
what did she tell them? She told them what happened between her and Jesus.
That's truly all we have to do as well. All we have to do is allow Jesus to use our story’s.
if you are not there yet you can invite them to Good Friday service.
On Good Friday we Go through The Passion of the Christ and the cross and we give people the opportunity to surrender to the Lordship of Jesus.
I am asking for your help. I am asking for your help to fill this place up on Good Friday. I am not looking for numbers for the sake of numbers. I want to preach the gospel to the people who need it the most. Please make the commitment to come, ask the Lord who you should invite!
Conclusion:
Did you have help on your journey through faith? I did! Their faces often come to my mind and I am grateful for all they did for me. This week I have been thinking how natural it came to them. It seemed effortless to me and in the moment it was, the life leading up to that moment not so much. wouldn’t you like to do the same for someone.
Like the Samaritans, some people have been walking in some kind of rejection for generations. An introduction to Jesus would change their lives. You could be Jesus wing man.
Finally The Lords plan to keep meeting people at their “well” is you and I. will you allow the Lord to use you and your story and your past no matter who it is that that He puts in your path?
