Dead Works and Dead Faith

Telos: Repentance from dead works is turning from useless efforts to earn God’s approval.

1 Thessalonians 1:9 AMP

For they themselves volunteer testimony concerning us, telling what an entrance we had among you, and how you turned to God from [your] idols to serve a God Who is alive and true and genuine,

turned - to completely turn in a new direction repentance - to turn from; to change one’s thinking; a change of mind that has accompanying actions dead - useless; no value works - actions or deeds

Going back under the law rejects the grace God’s given us.  His grace isn’t given so we can live any way we want; it’s given so we can live empowered by it.

Repentance from dead works is turning from useless efforts to earn God’s approval.

Inspiration

Hebrews 6:1–2 NKJV

Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

dead works - climbing up to reach God; anything you do as a Christ follower that you think you have to do to complete your stance in God

A dead work is when you do something in order to receive something from God that Christ has already freely given to you!  good works - God’s work of grace spilling out from you touching the World around you.

good works- acting in faith according to His Word

James 2:24–26 NKJV

You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Ephesians 2:10 AMP

For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].
