What does discipleship look like?

The past four weeks, finishing today, I hope I have been answering this question. But beyond that how would you answer it.

What does generosity look like?

How have you been on the receiving end of generosity?

Relationships are key for discipleship!

As our passage reminds us we cannot truly have discipleship without a relationship. If discipleship was just about information we would not need to be “with” people.

Do people want to be in relationship with you?

This is an important question we must start to answer. Necessary ingredients: warmth, genuineness, empathy and respect. It will be hard to share Jesus effectively without a good relationship.

The primary call: to be “with” Jesus!

Not jus to “hang out” but to stay “with” Him. For me, hanging out happens every so often as it is convenient. To be with someone is to be intentional in what that time looks like and how often.

Discipleship is messy.

Those who like everything nice and neat will be frustrated. Those who like sameness will be frustrated. Those who like chaos will probably be frustrated as well. This is not simple nor “clean”.

After being “with” Jesus we must go out!

Jesus did not call disciples to just be with Him and not interact with anyone else. The kingdom of God is too important for us to just grow in our relationship with Jesus and not be concerned about reaching others.

Our going out is grounded in Jesus’ generosity.

Matthew says, “freely you have been given, freely you are to give”.

Jesus is calling you by name!

The call is personal and corporate. They were called by name but also to be together.

Who will you disciple?

In September we are hosting an ABC Ohio region seminar about passing out ministry from one leader to another. For me, this is part of discipleship.
