Call To Worship

Say: Let us now begin to worship the Father the Son, the Holy Spirit, Our Call to worship Comes to us from

Philippians 2:5–8 ESV
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Introduction

If you went to the temple, you would not be wrong to compare it to a slaughter house. The amount of Blood used would make the most rough and tumble man squeamish

Now and then we meet with some squeamish person who says, “I cannot bear the mention of the word blood.” Such individuals will be horrified this morning: and it is intended that they should be. Sin is such a horrible thing that God has appointed blood to wash it away, that the very horror which the thought of it causes may give you some notion of the terrible nature of sin as God judges it. It is not without a dreadful blood-shedding that your dreadful guilt could by any possibility be cleansed. Sin-bearing, and suffering for sin, can never be pleasant things; neither should the type which sets it forth be pleasing to the observer. On great days of sacrifice the courts of the tabernacle muse have seemed like a shambles, and fitly so, that all might be struck with the deadly nature of sin.

Text

Mark 15:16–32 ESV
16 And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. 17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him. 21 And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25 And it was the third hour when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. 29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

Observations and Background

Main Idea to summarize the text

Through their actions to destroy they fuffill God’s plan.

Point 1 The Fulfillment of scripture

All of history was pointing to this momment. All of history is still reflecting this moment. It is the great division between all history. fulfilment
This whole event is predicted in Psalm 22 among others
Mark 15:24 ESV
24 And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.
is Ps. 22:18
Psalm 22:18 ESV
18 they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
The insults Jesus would recieve
Mark 15:29 ESV
29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
is Ps. 22:7
Psalm 22:7 ESV
7 All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
He was taunted on not being able to save himself
Mark 15:30–31 ESV
30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself.
Is an echo of Ps. 22:8
Psalm 22:8 ESV
8 “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
And of course Jesus says in Mark 15:34
Mark 15:34 ESV
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
is Ps. 22:1
Psalm 22:1 ESV
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
This event vindicates the message of Christ. whp predicted this reaptedly. He teaches us that We can have hope in our circumstances

Application

Mark The Fulfillment of Scripture

The resurrection, also repeatedly predicted by Jesus (8:31; 9:9, 31; 10:34; 14:28), will provide the ultimate vindication of Jesus’ messiahship and God’s sovereign plan.

For Mark’s readers, facing suffering, persecution, and even death, this truth would provide hope and encouragement. No challenges we face in life are outside of God’s control or sovereign will. After suffering comes vindication for those who trust in him.

Point 2 (16, 21-22) The Offering of Jesus

Mark 15:16 ESV
16 And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion.
Mark 15:21–22 ESV
21 And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull).
I want you to notice that Jesus was driven from the city of Jerusalem. He was brought to Calvary.
Why I make this point was that Jesus was about to become and In our text you can see it, is to become the last offering ever made, and he becomes the sin offering on behalf of his people.

The Last Sacrifice (the end of the temple system)

Jesus was the last sacrifice. He wasn’t made in the temple he was the one time for all.
You see The system in the OT was a shadow, here is what I believe Paul said
Hebrews 10:1–4 ESV
1 For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? 3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
The Bulls did nothing but point towards the coming vicotry of Christ.
Hebrews 10:10–18 ESV
10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. 15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, 16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” 17 then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” 18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

Application:

Do you see what happened? This was the case that Jesus waited to the perfect time. The day of salvation is now!
No better time, the enemies had been put under his footstool.
To the person in here still trying to do it under their own way. You can no mopre build a ladder to the moon then you an save yourself.
Some of you believe what I said but by your actions don’t trust this one time sacrifice. You keep sacrficing, but experince no peace. You have peace, you have rest.
You need to rest in him.

The Sin offering

Jesus being dragged away from Jerusalem, away from the temple to die for our sins is a fitting story.
If you know about the OT sacrificial system

A form of animal sacrifice (

When Jesus was brought outside the city it was the fuffillment of the OT sacrfices
Exodus 29:14 ESV
14 But the flesh of the bull and its skin and its dung you shall burn with fire outside the camp; it is a sin offering.
Sin must be offered outside the camp.
If you look at the sacfices on the behalf of all God’s people you can see that Jesus was doing just this
Leviticus 16:20–22 ESV
20 “And when he has made an end of atoning for the Holy Place and the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall present the live goat. 21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins. And he shall put them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness. 22 The goat shall bear all their iniquities on itself to a remote area, and he shall let the goat go free in the wilderness.
This is the scapegoat. The sins of all the people would be put on it and it would be lead out into the wilderness, a solitary place where it would die.
Jesus was lead out to a solitary place in the wilderness, outside the city to die.

Application:

You might be traking with this so far, but you’ll notice, we aren’t sacrificing any animals any more. in fact We the sacrifice of the perfect Jesus we don’t need to.
The thing that you need to know is that we still see the sacrifice before us today.
Hebrews 4:12 ESV
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
You today experince the sacficical system through the preaching of the word about the actions of our God.
So listen to sermons well. (Expand as you will)

Point 3 He was brought out so that you may be brought in (27-28)

Mark 15:27–28 NKJV
27 With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left. 28 So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors.”
I want you to see a few things about Christ on the cross
John 19:19–20 ESV
19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek.
Do you see that this was written in the primary langauges of the Med, world?
Because all all welcome in to the temple. All have access to know Jesus as the king that he is.
You may know thw story of the Robbers
Luke 23:39–43 ESV
39 One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
You are welcome, all you need to do is all onto Christ. Just seek him with you heart.
Today you can be welcome into paradise.
