The 10 Commandments
Notes
Transcript
Sort of feel like we know the 10 commandments pretty well
Remember I think it was last year
We actually went through all 10 commandments
And when you think of the 10 commandments
You think yea I now the 10 commandments
Then you dive into them
You start to unpack them and dig in deep
Maybe you are reading through your Bible this year and you have read through the 10 commandments in Exodus
then you get to Leviticus
And you get bored and stop
But understand
God gave them the 10 commandments
Then he sort of expounded on them and answered the what if questions that any new nation would have if they were talking about laws and what to do and how to do it
That is what Leviticus is
But remember it sort of started with the 10 commandments
When God said if you will obey my commands then you will be blessed
If you and I will do the things that I have told you to do
So 10 commandments
If you want to know how to grow your relationship with Jesus
Look at the 10 commandments
1 Then God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before Me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5 “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. 7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. 8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. 11 “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
The first 4 commandments
We know that the first for commandments deal with our relationship with God
Because that is the most important thing
It is our relationship with Jesus that allows us to operate in this world
What to know how to grow in your relationship with Christ
You do these
You have no other Gods
so those big G gods in your life get ride of
And even those small g gods get ride of them as well
To get rid of other gods in your life you must crush the idols you have set up in your life
I heard last week that Pastors have to kill the idol of church and church attendance in their own lives
To grow in your walk with Christ you cannot and should not misuse the name of God
Do not attach the name to things that are not of God
at the base name level there is no other name like God
There is power in the name of Jesus
And then the last part of the first 4 commandments is to keep the sabbath
something I believe we Christians struggle to do
To trust the Lord
To rest in the Lord
To grow in our personal relationship with Christ we must take time to rest
Sometimes that means resting from the many duties of ministry and church life
Notice that doesn’t mean to rest from Worshiping Jesus
But sometimes you need a break from teaching Sunday School, from working the sound booth, sometimes you need a break from leading worship
So that you can rest
So that you can enjoy a worship service as a participant
This is what God had given then nation of Israel
If they expected to be Gods people and for God to be their God then they needed to do these things
Church
If you and I expect to grow in our personal relationship with God then nothing has changed
Think of your walk
If you want to it to grow and grow then start to put action to your faith
Start to follow these commands
Start to prioritize tour personal relationship with Jesus
Start to make Him number one in your life by taking some actions in your life
The Israelites had to do the same thing
They had to get rid of all the idols within their families
Church we need to do the same thing
You need to rid your selves and your families of the idols of the small g and big g God in your life
There is only 1 God
Also church you need to rest in the Lord
I have people ask me how I am doing
I am constantly saying I am tired
that I need a break
Church when we begin to do this then we are loving Jesus with our entire being
Then there are the other 6 commandments
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you. 13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
When we read those we go those just make sense right
If you want to live at peace with others as scripture calls us to do as best we can
Then we need to follow these
If we are being obedient to God and we are to love others
Church this is how we love others
The nation of Israel was given these as they had never been on their own that this generation could remember
so they need some rules in how to treat others
God then goes into detail on those in Leviticus
And most of us have grown up with these remaining 6
And church they just make sense
It makes sense to honor your parents because they are there to raise you up to follow after Jesus
Like if you want to love people it really makes sense not to murder them right
It makes sense not to lie to them either
Church we often find ourselves looking at what Jesus said about the 10 commandments and how He summed them up and we fill book stores with how to do them
35 One of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 “This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”
Here Jesus answers a question regarding the Law
Jesus took the entire Law and summed them up into 2 commands
And we like this right
2 we can talk about it and they are shorter so we should understand them
But we get caught up on the how to
Church this is paramount to our growth in Christ
This is what it is to put our faith to action
To love Jesus means to Love Jesus with our entire being
To love Jesus with out talents
with our time
With our money
With our families
With our jobs
To love Jesus with our platform we have been given
And then church once we have done that
Those actions drive us to love others the way God loves them
We can’t love other first and then love God because we couldn’t love those people because we don’t have the Love of God
So that is why we grow that relationship first and foremost but by growing that relatinship it drives us and compels us to love others as Chrisst loves them
We start to see people how Christ sees them
And Christ loved them enough to die for them
Can we love them enough to boldly tell them about jesus
Can we love them enough to awkwardly tell them they need Jesus
Can we love them enough to pray with them in public while others watch
Can we love them enough to hold up the line at the drive through or the grocery store because someone needs to know Christ or someone needs you to pray with them
So church how to do we put our faith into action
Church this is what it is to put our faith to action
35 “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Church to put our faith into action
We must Love God with our entire being and people with our entire being
And we sit in church and say amen cause we agree with that as we should
We should agree to love Jesus with our entire being and love people
Then we must go out and do it
Understand to Love Jesus with your entire being is to put His will in front of your own will and for God to change your heart to match His
When we do that then we can start to love others
Sometimes others are not so lovable and we are to still love them
To love them doesn’t mean we approve or accept their choices sometimes to love them is to tell them they are wrong and need to change
Church it is time for us to put the 10 commandments to action
Not that we have a check off each day if we have done them or not
Because Jesus comes and makes it a matter of the heart
Church your actions will tell us your heart
If Jesus is number one your actions will show that
If you love others your actions will show that
It is time we put our faith to action and not just sitting around listen to and or discussing scripture
22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.
Now we have been called to live out a faith church
I encourage you to do that
Don’t be someone who just listens but be a doer of what you read in the Bible
So this morning as we move to our time of invitation
This morning maybe you are here and you don’t have a personal relationship
I would invite you to speak with someone
they will be able to answers your questions from scripture and show you how you can repent of your sin and trust in Jesus this morning
Or maybe you have a relationship with Jesus but you have just been coasting or just listening
Maybe this morning you have been called to action this morning and you need to spend sometime at the altar repenting to start to put your faith to action
Or maybe this morning you need to spend time at the altar in prayer
Or maybe you need to make a decision of membership
The altar is open
