Pressing On Toward the Goal

**Text:** Philippians 3:13: *"Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead."*

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today, we gather to reflect on a powerful message from the Apostle Paul found in Philippians 3:13. This verse calls us to let go of our past and focus on the future that God has in store for us.

1.Forgetting What is Behind

Paul begins by acknowledging that he has not yet achieved his ultimate goal. Despite his incredible journey and numerous accomplishments, he humbly admits that he is still striving for something greater. This is a reminder for us all that no matter how far we've come, there's always room for growth and improvement in our walk with Christ.

To truly understand this, we must first grasp the concept of "forgetting what is behind." This doesn't mean erasing our memories or ignoring our past experiences. Instead, it means not allowing our past mistakes, failures, or even successes to hinder our progress.

**Supporting Scripture:**
- **Isaiah 43:18-19:** *"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland."*
- **Hebrews 12:1:** *"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."*

2. Straining Toward What is Ahead

Paul uses the metaphor of a race to illustrate his point. Just as a runner focuses on the finish line and pushes forward with all their might, we too must press on toward the goal that God has set before us. This requires determination, perseverance, and unwavering faith.

**Word Illustration:** Imagine a runner in a marathon. As they near the end of the race, they don't look back to see how far they've come or who is behind them. Instead, they fix their eyes on the finish line and give it their all. Their past accomplishments and struggles are irrelevant in that moment because what matters most is crossing that finish line.

**Supporting Scripture:**
- **1 Corinthians 9:24:** *"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize."*
- **Hebrews 12:2:** *"Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."*

3. Practical Application

As we reflect on Paul's message, let's consider how we can apply it to our own lives:

1. **Release the Past:** Identify any past mistakes, failures, or even successes that may be holding you back. Pray for God's guidance and strength to let go and move forward.

2. **Set Godly Goals:** Ask God to reveal the goals and purposes He has for your life. Write them down and keep them in your heart as you press on toward them.

3. **Stay Focused:** Just as a runner keeps their eyes on the finish line, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. Spend time in prayer, worship, and studying the Word to stay connected to Him.

4. **Persevere:** There will be challenges and obstacles along the way, but remember that God is with you. Draw strength from His presence and continue to press on, knowing that He will provide all you need to reach your goal.

### Conclusion

In conclusion, let us take Paul's words to heart and commit to forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. As we press on toward the goal, may we be encouraged by the knowledge that God is doing a new thing in our lives and that He is making a way for us in the wilderness.

May the Lord bless you and keep you as you continue to run the race marked out for you, always striving for the prize of eternal life in Christ Jesus.

Amen.
