Jesus is Israel’s Promised Messiah

“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, [Jesus] interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” (Luke 24:27)

In Genesis

He is the Creator (Gen 1:1)

Colossians 1:16 “16 For by [Christ] all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”

He is the seed of the woman (Gen 3:15)

Galatians 4:4 “4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,”

He is the true and better Adam (Gen 3:17)

1 Corinthians 15:45 “45 Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.”

He is the true and better Abel (Genesis 4:10)

Hebrews 12:24 “24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.”

He is the promised offspring of Abraham (Gen 15:5)

Galatians 3:16 “16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ.”

He is the great I Am (Ex 3:15)

He is the Passover Lamb (Ex 12)

He is the true and better High Priest (Lev 8)

He is the true and better sacrifice

Hebrews 9:12 “12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.”
Hebrews 9:24–26 “24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, 26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.”

In Numbers

He is the true and better Bronze Serpent (Num. 21:8-9)

John 3:14–15 “14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.”

He is the star and the ruler rising out of Israel (Num 24:17)

Matthew 2:1–2 “1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.””

In Deuteronomy

He is promised prophet (Deut. 18:15)

John 6:14 “14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!””

He is the curse bearer (Deut. 21:22-23)

Galatians 3:13 “13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—”

In Joshua

He is the true and better Joshua (Joshua 1:2)

Hebrews 4:8–9 “8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. 9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God,”

He is the commander of the Lord’s army (Joshua 5:13-15)

Colossians 2:15 “15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”

He is the fulfillment of all of God’s promises (Joshua 21:44)

In Judges

He is the true and better deliverer (Judges 2:16) Matthew 1:21 “21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.””

In Ruth

He welcomes the outsiders at his table (Ruth 2:14)

Ephesians 2:12–13 “12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”

He is true and better kinsman-redeemer (Ruth 3:9)

Ephesians 1:7 “7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,”

In the books of Samuel

He is the true and greater King-Shepherd David (2 Sam 5:2)

John 10:11 “11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

He is the Son of David who sits on the throne forever (2 Samuel 7:12-16)

Luke 1:32–33 “32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.””

In the books of Kings and Chronicles

He is the true and better Salomon (1 Kings 3:28)

Matthew 12:42 “42 The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.”

He is the true and better temple (1 Kings 6)

John 2:19–21 “19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body.”

In Ezra

He sets his heart to fulfill the Law of the Lord (Ezra 7:10)

Matthew 5:17 “17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

He is the true and better intercessor for his people (Ezra 9:5-15)

He is the forsaken Messiah (Psalm 22)

Matthew 27:46 “46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?””

He is the risen Messiah (Psalm 16)

Acts 2:31–32 “31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.”

He is the true and better High Priest (Psalm 110)

Hebrews 7:17 “17 For it is witnessed of [Christ], “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.””

He is the rejected cornerstone

He is the wisdom of God (Proverbs 8)

He is the source of meaning and satisfaction (Ecc 1)

John 4:13–14 “13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.””

In the Song of Solomon

He is the bridegroom (Song 8:6-7)

Ephesians 5:25–27 “25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.”

He is the light to the nations (Isaiah 9:2)

He is the suffering servant who bears our sins (Isaiah 53)

1 Peter 2:24 “24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.”

He is the Messiah who proclaims good news (Isaiah 61:1)

Luke 4:17–21 “17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He is the mediator of a the new covenant (Jeremiah 31:31-34)

Hebrews 8:6 “6 But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.”

He is our righteousness (Jeremiah 23:5-6)

2 Corinthians 5:21 “21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

He bears the wrath of God (Lamentations 3:1)

1 Thessalonians 1:10 “10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.”

He is the Lord’s anointed who is arrested (Lamentations 4:20)

He is the stone that crushes kingdoms (Daniel 2:35)

In Hosea

In Nahum

He is the avenger of God’s people (Nahum 1:2)

He is the true and better signet ring who carries God’s authority (Haggai 2:23)

In Zechariah

He is the king riding on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9)

He is betrayed for thirty pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12-13)

He is the Sun of Righteousness (Malachi 4:2)
