WHAT IT MEANS TO BE SAVED

Preaching Illustrations from Church History Salvation—Requires Humility

When Prince Edward Augustus, the father of Queen Victoria, expressed in the prospect of death, concern, about the state of his soul, his physician endeavored to soothe his mind by referring to his high respectability, and his honorable conduct in the distinguished situation in which God has placed him. Prince Edward stopped him short, saying, “No; remember, if I am to be saved, it is not as a prince but as a sinner.

And as I read this, I came to realize, that Prince Edward understood, that none of his princely accolades, merit him salvation! He understood that no matter how honorable his conduct or behavior was in the last days of his life, that it did not earn him, the right to be saved! But yet he ignored his high position, he held no regard into how good a person he had been in this gravely situation, and understood clearly, that if I am to be saved, I must deal with the fact, that I am a sinner! And brothers and sisters, I want to tell you, that you can’t shout over grace, until you’ve first dealt with guilt! That is to say, that until a person’s eyes are open to the ugliness of sin, they’ll never see the beauty of salvation! Because part of understanding what it means to be saved, is knowing why I needed to be saved in the first place!
And I want to inform you, that everybody, both the believer and the non-believer needs to understand what it means to be saved! The non-believer so that it could lead them to a life of salvation and the believer, so that they can walk in the victory that Christ has given them!
Heart-Touching Sermon Outlines 20. What It Means to Be Saved (Romans 10:13)

The word saved appears fifty-seven times in the New Testament. Saved means delivered and preserved. It describes what happens when God translates a sinner from the realm of the lost into the realm of the saved. To be saved encompasses all that God does for a person when that person trusts the Lord Jesus as Saviour.

Paul writes her in the book of Romans chapter 10 on the how one is saved! He said Romans 10:1–4 “Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”
Israel mistook the purpose of the law. The law pointed to the righteousness that is attainable only by Berkey in Christ. Israel also mistook the scope of the law. The righteousness to which it pointed was universally available to all who responded to God’s revelation of Himself through the law. But by Paul's time, many had substituted works for faith. Rather than seeing redemption in God's mercy, they pinned their hopes on their own religious achievement.
Yes Paul deals with the how as he says Romans 10:9–11 “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.””
Understand that one is not saved by his mouths confession, but rather, the mouth testifies readily of the grace of God in Christ which had been received by faith.
So it is when we know the why we need to be saved, and when we learn the how we can be saved, that we can move into understanding the what it means to be saved!

It means hence, what a man earns or deserves; what is his proper pay, or what he merits. As applied to sin, it means that death is what sin deserves; what will be its proper reward.

Jesus paid it all on Calvary! The song writer said, I am redeemed! Bought with a price! Jesus gave His own life! I wasn’t purchased with silver and gold! The blood of bulls and the blood of goats, couldn’t pardon my sin! But I’ve been redeemed, by the blood of the lamb! And the Bible says, let the redeemed of the Lord, say so!
It cost me nothing, but it costs Him everything!
