Genesis 2:5–25 NASB95
Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the Lord God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground. But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. The Lord God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed. Out of the ground the Lord God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it divided and became four rivers. The name of the first is Pishon; it flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. The gold of that land is good; the bdellium and the onyx stone are there. The name of the second river is Gihon; it flows around the whole land of Cush. The name of the third river is Tigris; it flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
Genesis 2:5–25 NASB95
Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

What is the current situation in the environment?

Refer to the previous week’s service? What was it like to live in that time-frame?

What were the requirements given by God:

Genesis 2:5–25 NASB95
Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”

Cultivate the garden

Keep the garden

Eat any tree but one, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil

What is the one command that comes with a consequence?

Eating of the knowledge of good and evil.

What is the knowledge of good and evil?

And intimate relationship with evil.

They had only had the experience of good.

Imagine only knowing good. Never knowing a scratch of pain, never experiencing a loss of breath, the most minimal amount of suffering has never been a part of Adam and Eve’s lives.

What does it mean to cultivate the garden?

To ensure the growth and well-being of the garden

To work: To exert oneself by doing mental or physical work for a purpose or out of necessity.
1 ʿśh 1 make, manufacture; do (39x)
Exodus 23:12 ““Six days you are to do your work, but on the seventh day you shall cease from labor so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female slave, as well as your stranger, may refresh themselves.”
Ruth 2:19 “Her mother-in-law then said to her, “Where did you glean today and where did you work? May he who took notice of you be blessed.” So she told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked and said, “The name of the man with whom I worked today is Boaz.””
2 Kings 12:11 “They gave the money which was weighed out into the hands of those who did the work, who had the oversight of the house of the Lord; and they paid it out to the carpenters and the builders who worked on the house of the Lord;”
1 Chronicles 22:16 ““Of the gold, the silver and the bronze and the iron there is no limit. Arise and work, and may the Lord be with you.””

What does it mean to keep the garden?

To Guard and protect the garden and all that is in it.

2 Chronicles 6:15–16 “who has kept with Your servant David, my father, that which You have promised him; indeed You have spoken with Your mouth and have fulfilled it with Your hand, as it is this day. “Now therefore, O Lord, the God of Israel, keep with Your servant David, my father, that which You have promised him, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your sons take heed to their way, to walk in My law as you have walked before Me.’”
2 Samuel 22:24 ““I was also blameless toward Him, And I kept myself from my iniquity.”
2 Samuel 22:44 ““You have also delivered me from the contentions of my people; You have kept me as head of the nations; A people whom I have not known serve me.”
τηρέω tēreō keep; observe (14x) New Testament Parallel
John 17:11–12 ““I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are. “While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.”
James 1:27 “Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.”
2 Peter 2:9 “then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,”

What sex is Adam?

Male.

What does this tell us about God’s desire for men?

Why would that matter?

The sex of a person matters, and is biological. Sexes were created at the beginning.
Genesis 2:5–25 NASB95
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.

What did God know about Adam?

Genesis 2:5–25 NASB95
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”

What is a helper?

Let’s look at some passages:
Psalm 10:14 “You have seen it, for You have beheld mischief and vexation to take it into Your hand. The unfortunate commits himself to You; You have been the helper of the orphan.”
Psalm 22:11 “Be not far from me, for trouble is near; For there is none to help.”
Psalm 22:19 “But You, O Lord, be not far off; O You my help, hasten to my assistance.”
Psalm 118:7 “The Lord is for me among those who help me; Therefore I will look with satisfaction on those who hate me.”
Nahum 3:9 “Ethiopia was her might, And Egypt too, without limits. Put and Lubim were among her helpers.”
Isaiah 31:2 “Yet He also is wise and will bring disaster And does not retract His words, But will arise against the house of evildoers And against the help of the workers of iniquity.”

Who are these passages speaking about?

God

What sex is the helper?

How does a helper help a man not be alone?

Is this the kind of helper we hear about from women’s studies?

What does this tell us about women as God designed them?

Does this mean every woman needs to get married?

If a woman wants to or is married, what does this say about how God has made them to be?

What are we doing by analyzing what these expectations for men and women were?

Roles for males and females, men and women.

What did God have Adam do?

Made him name the animals.
Genesis 2:5–25 NASB95
Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him.

Why did God make him do it?

To help Adam know it.

Did he know everything about Adam when he created him?

What was discovered from Adam naming the animals?

It was found that there was not a helper suitable for him.
Genesis 2:5–25 NASB95
The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him.

What did God do in response to this?

Genesis 2:5–25 NASB95
So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.

Why is this important to understand?

God created authority structures between men and women and used this verse in Genesis to support it:
1 Corinthians 11:1–16 NASB95
Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ. Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you. But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying disgraces his head. But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for she is one and the same as the woman whose head is shaved. For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head. For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but woman for the man’s sake. Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God. Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering. But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God. What is different about how God made man and woman?

What does this say about God?

What was Adam’s response?

Genesis 2:5–25 NASB95
The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

What was their response to their nakedness?

Not ashamed.
[We will need to remember this for next week.]
