A. The Wicked World - Genesis 6
A. The Wicked World - Genesis 6
Sin Problem
People in Noah’s day had a very big problem, they were bad to the core. The Bible calls them wicked. Genesis 6:5
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Do you know what that means? It means evil, a very bad thing.
Ill: Bullies at school, they’re evil sometimes. These people were always bad!
Rewind to the beginning of the world...
Explain Adam and Eve falling into evil sin.
Because of their actions, everyone now is evil in our hearts.
Ill: Do you think you have an evil heart? “I can’t be that bad! I gave fishy crackers to my friend the other day, and I don’t push people around for fun.” Ask mom and dad what they think, and they’ll give you a different story. (Disobey parents, not sharing toys, making fun of our friends, lying to people, etc.)
We really aren’t too different from these people at all...
God is Angry at Sin
God decided that it was time for all this evil to stop, He saw everything that was going on, and He knew he had to destroy all the people in the world to stop the evil. Genesis 6:7
7 So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.”
It was time for God to start things over again, but there was one very special family that would be saved… Genesis 6:8
8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
Noah was the one man that followed God in his generation...
God decided to restart humanity with this man and his family. Wouldn’t you feel special? Out of all the people in the whole wide world, God chooses you!
B. Build the Ark! - Genesis 6:13-22
Dimensions - 6:13-16
510’ long
Ill: fits 450 cargo trucks, 1 1/2 football fields long, 3 space ships long. Could’ve fit 120 000 sheep if he wanted to.
Plan - 6:17-22
Bringing the flood waters down on the earth.
Ill: Filling up big water bottle feels like it’s taking forever… God filled the whole wide world with water in just 40 days!
This water killed all the people in the entire world except Noah and his family.
Plan for the animals is in vs. 19. Genesis 6:19
19 And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female.
Animals gathered into the ark. It realistically had lots of room for the animals!
C. Flood - Genesis 7
Animals Gathered - 7:1-16
Every kind of animals, insects, and birds came into the ark.
Ill: Photo illustration of all the animals
Judgment - 7:17-24
The time had come, God sent all the rain and floods on the whole world. Genesis 7:16-17
16 And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the Lord shut him in. 17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.
God shut the door of the ark, “BOOM”. Nobody else was allowed to come in. You can only imagine all the people outside wanting to come into the ark. “Nooo! I didn’t believe what you told me before Noah, I thought you were crazy saying that God would judge us! But I believe now! Please let me in!” Do you think it would be hard to listen to all that?
Absolutely that would be hard! But God had given them their chance to listen. 2 Peter 2:5
5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
Noah had been warning the world about God’s judgment for years. “Listen to me! God is going to send a huge flood, you need to leave your evil behind and believe in Him!”
Do you think the people listened well to Noah?
They didn’t! If they did, they would’ve jumped right on that ark as fast as they could. But it was too late for those people. God gave them a chance to believe the warnings of Noah, and now they had no choice but die because they didn’t believe him.
21 And all flesh died that moved on the earth: birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man. 22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, all that was on the dry land, died.
There was only one door to get on to the ark, there was only one way of salvation.
Do you remember why God sent the flood on the earth?
It was because of the sin of the people. The only way to be saved from that punishment was to believe what Noah was telling them and follow him on the ark. If you chose not to believe and not go on, God closed the door on you.
Just like the people in Noah’s day, we have a very big problem, it’s what we call sin. God hates our sin, and it has to be punished. Our punishment for sin is even worse than a flood, we deserve to be punished in hell; a place of fire, it’s a very bad place to be. But like Noah, God has told us how we can escape that judgment!
Does anyone know how we can escape judgment?
It’s Jesus! In John 10:7-9, Jesus says...
7 Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
Jesus is the way for us to be saved from the punishment we deserve. Jesus pictures Himself as a door, and if we want to be saved, He’s the only door that we can walk into!
Believe in Jesus and ask Him to come into your heart, He will save you from what you deserve.
