Good Morning and welcome to Faith Baptist Church we are so glad that you are here this morning! We are about to do something really weird… Isn’t that a fun way for me to start the service. We are going to do something really weird. We are going to sing…. Have you ever thought about why we sing? Why in the world do we all get together in a big room and sing together week after week.
Singing in one sense is completely unnecessary. It doesn’t serve any necessary purpose that is required for living or human flourishing. And yet can you imagine a world without singing? A life without music? That would be a life that is not worth living.
We were created to sing. We were created to fill the world with song. We come here together this morning to do what we were created to do. Sing.
But who do we sing to? Who is the audience of our praise.
Well first and foremost we sing to God. We sing songs like to God be the Glory great things he hath done. So loved He the World that HE sent us His Son! We sing songs of adoration and praise to God for all that he has done in the creation and redemption of the world.
But we also sing to each other. We often come to church discouraged from a long week. Worn down from living in this sin cursed world. So we sing to remind those sitting next to us to turn their eyes to Jesus to look full in his wonderful face and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.
But then we also sing to ourself. Because We spend so much of our time listening to ourselves. We listen to self-doubts, we listen to the devil’s lies, and the accuser’s accusations of shame and guilt and unworthiness. But when we sing we get the chance to talk to ourselves. To preach truth to our hearts.
We sing to ourselves to remind us that our worth is not in what we own, Not in the strength of flesh and bone, But in the costly wounds of love, At the cross our worth is shown!
So this morning we are going to corporately do what we were created to do. We are going to sing and as we sing remember to sing first to God, then to each other, and lastly sing to your own soul.
Will you stand with me this morning and let’s sing.
