Mounting Excitement

The people that are following Jesus from Jericho are realizing this is the promised Messiah

the atmosphere is working up into a frenzy

the people are calling Jesus the Son of David / king of the world

the kingdom is about to begin

the Romans are going to be destroyed

Israel has been waiting for this since the captivity in Babylon

and now its finally going to happen

the prophets have fore told this event

Jesus is on the Mount of Olives

between Him and the temple is a valley

a person wanks down the hill and up the other side into the Temple

V 28-29

this is the exact time and day according to Daniel for Jesus to come into the temple as the Messiah

V 30

the mode of transportation is an un-ridden colt of a donkey

so Jesus sends 2 disciples

Go into the village and get the colt tied there

How did Jesus know?

God knows everything

some say this was pre arranged

but I don’t think so

Here is the Messiah demonstrating who He is

these men, I wonder what they were thinking as they are going on this mission

will it be there

this is crazy

enter the village it’s going to be right there

just untie it and take it

V 31

and if anybody asks. just say the Lord needs it

then what ?

yeah right! and then you see them surrounding you

don’t our imagination run wild with us

we think of the absolute worst

we stop ourselves from evangelizing because of our imagination

and fear grips us

V 32-34

But what happens with these 2 who were sent on this mission for Jesus

exactly what Jesus said

everything turned out for the good

The King is Coming

now the excitement has come to a fever pitch

Prophecy is being fulfilled

V 35 put their outer garment

basically its a throw blanket fastened around the neck

the disciples of Jesus, the 12 are doing this for a saddle for Jesus

V 36-37

spreading on the road they are saying my garment represents me- I am putting myself under your feet

I am making you my Lord

but they are looking at Jesus as a king

not a savior

not the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world

this is the person that they are bowing to the king that will bring peace because He will destroy the Romans

Jesus is the prince of peace

what does this mean ?

Jesus came to bring peace between us and the Father

to bring reconciliation between us and the Father

Philippians 4:7 LSB

And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

which is much more important than physical peace

this is a temporary happiness at best

in fact a life of peace will not hold a candle to an eternity of peace that Jesus has came to bring

for all who repent and believe the gospel as Jesus commands all to do

V 37

all were rejoicing even the 12

multitude of the disciples

we need to be careful of this word

follower, pupil

if someone is walking with Jesus and learning something then they are a disciple

students in a classroom are disciples

there were 3 types of people in this crowd

the 12

the follower coming from Jericho coming to the passover and the Passover people coming out of Jerusalem to meet Jesus saying that they will be under his reign

and the Pharisees in the crowd who hated Jesus

most of these people by the end of the week will be saying crucify Him

because He did not meet their high expectations

but as of today

V 38-40

the Pharisees are demanding Jesus to control the people

The Pharisees want to kill Him for being a heretic. the people want to crown Him

a zeal for the wrong thing

Jesus Laments

V 41

Jesus saw their heart

Jesus saw their unrepentant heart

their selfishness

the people have a joyful expectation

Jesus is crying over the city

he sees their spitting on him

the mockery the lack of faith

V 42 if you knew the peace that I want to give you

yet you want something superficial

V 43-44

so they will be punished again

God is going to take away Jerusalem

the admired temple is to be destroyed

the land will become desolate

the people will be dispersed throughout the world

why because they did not recognize the Lamb

they had a lot of zeal for their version of the Messiah

they had a lot of zeal for their version of the Father

but their knowledge was wrong and they paid for it

just like today a lot of peoples version of God is wrong

John 8:32 LSB

and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

Jesus is the truth Jesus is the only way to Heaven

your zeal might be great for your version of faith but what is the object of your faith?

make sure your zeal has truth for it’s foundation
