INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
For the past 3 weeks we’ve been walking through the story of the hours leading up to Jesus’ resurrection – incidents that were predicted by the prophet Isaiah, 700 years before they happened.
Isaiah predicted that the Messiah would
be betrayed by friends,
remain silent while accused,
and be counted among criminals.
Today we’re going to see Him become sheep-like, as Isaiah says “He was led like a lamb to the slaughter.”
Read Isaiah 53 1-3
Jesus was a carpenter by trade.
He spent 17 years of His life cutting wood, chiseling stone, and building buildings.
He was a well-built man, who, in the prime of His life, allowed a bunch of pew-sitting priests, to lead Him up
the Kidron Valley to the place of His death, like the shepherds were doing that very same day with the sheep they were bringing up from Bethlehem to be sacrificed in the Temple.
SEGUE
No one could have guessed it - but the story was foreshadowed.
Because if you understand it,
The story of the Bible is the story of the Lamb:
The story of the Bible is the story of the Lamb:
Open a Bible to Genesis 3,
Genesis 3 is the story of our first parents, Adam and Eve.
They were in the Garden.
It was perfect.
They were naked, and not ashamed.
God had given them everything they needed, with one restriction:
“Do not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,” He said.
“Or you will surely die.”
With Satan’s help, they ate anyway.
Scripture says they looked around and realized they were naked, so they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.
God was in the habit of walking with them in the still of the evening.
When they heard Him coming they panicked and hid under a bush.
The scene goes from tragic to comic.
Because really, how do you hide from God?
“Adam, where are you?”
Adam says, “Well, I was naked.
So I hid.”
“Who told you you were naked?
You didn’t eat from the tree I told you not to, did you?”
At which point, the human blame game was born.
Adam pointed to his wife – “She made me do it.”
Eve pointed to the serpent – “He made me do it.”
And in this moment, when they should have died, the Bible says,
God provided an animal skin to cover Adam and Eve.
Follow me for a moment: Genesis 3:21 says,
The Lord God made clothing from skins for the man and his wife, and he clothed them.
Where do you suppose God got those skins?
[From the carcass of an animal. In order to redeem Adam and Eve’s shame, He killed an animal on their behalf.]
That animal’s life became the substitute for their lives.
TRANS
Keeping this in mind, Let’s go to Genesis 22.
In Genesis 21 Abraham has a son in his old age.
A son he’s been promised.
A son he waited 25 years for.
Chapter 22 opens with God saying, “Abraham, Abraham!
Take your son, your only son, whom you love, and offer him to me as a burnt offering on Mt. Moriah.”
Abraham doesn’t understand this.
But he trusts God.
It’s a three-day journey to Mt. Moriah.
Abraham brings three things with him: a bundle of wood, a tinderbox with fire, and a knife.
He lets Isaac carry the wood.
He carries the fire and the knife himself.
The fire is hot. The knife is sharp.
He doesn’t want Isaac to get hurt.
Abraham builds an altar and straps his son to it.
Then, in the worst moment of his life, He reaches up with the knife to bring it down on his son, and suddenly, God speaks again: “Abraham, Abraham!”
“Here I am,” he says.
“Don’t lay a hand on your son or do anything to harm him.
For now I know that you really do have faith in me, because you did not withhold even your son from me.”
Read Genesis 22:13 says,
At this crucial moment, when a sacrifice was called for, – God provided a ram in place of Isaac.
For those of us who didn’t grow up on a farm, A RAM is a male lamb
TRANS
Now lets go to Exodus Chapter 12
The children of Israel are in slavery in Egypt.
God wants to free them, so He presents Pharaoh with 10 powerful visual aids, each designed to demonstrate that He is superior to the gods of Egypt.
Chapter 12 tells the story of the tenth visual aid. –
The tenth plague.
God is going to judge Egypt for their sins.
But the Israelites have sinned too.
So God says to Moses,
Read Chapter 12 (1)
Read Chapter 12 (2)
Read Chapter 12 (3)
Moses relays this message to every Jewish household.
They all adopt a lamb.
They bring it into their home. They play with it.
They name it.
They bond with it. And love it.
And on day four, the father of the household takes it out back and slits it’s throat.
Imagine how the children are feeling:
“Dad, why did you do that? What did Fluffy do dad?”
“He didn’t do anything kids.
He was innocent.
We did things that were wrong, and God said we could pay for those ourselves, or we could substitute Fluffy for our sins.
It was either Fluffy, or one of us.”
There was moaning in households all over Egypt that night.
In every household except those who sacrificed a lamb as a substitute to pay for their sins.
3. Exodus 12 – The Israelites were spared judgment by sacrificing a lamb.
Read God’s instructions in Exodus 12
For the next 1,400 years, on the very same day: every Israelite brought a lamb into their home.
And, every household sacrificed a Passover lamb to cover their sins.
Year after year after year. Why?
Because they kept sinning, and the lamb’s sacrifice was never permanent.
It was temporary.
People longed for a permanent sacrifice.
One that would pay for their sins once and for all.
Isaiah spoke about a Suffering Servant who would one day come and align the people closely with God.
In the 53rd chapter of his book, Isaiah said...
He was led like a lamb to the slaughter… Is. 53:7b
Are you still Tracking?
Isaiah said He would be led like a what?
He said… Like a lamb.
People began to wonder
Could it really be that one day the lamb would be a man?
Nobody knew for sure.
But it was there now, in their sacred text.
SEGUE
Until one day a carpenter from Nazareth left His building shop and journeyed south along the Jordan River until He came to the place where a Rabbi named John was baptizing.
John was in the middle of the water when he looked up and saw Jesus on the shore.
Pointing His direction, John said,
“Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” Jn. 1:29b
This was the man who was the lamb and He was going to lift the weight of their sin.
Finally, Finally.
John identified Jesus as the Lamb of God. John 1
John identified Jesus as the Lamb of God. John 1
who takes away the sin of the world.
For next 3 ½ years Jesus
- Teaches like no other.
- Heals like no other.
- Cares like no other.
Then Jesus was led up a hill called “Golgotha,” where He suffered like a servant, and died like no other – giving His life as payment for the sins of the world.
With the last bit of oxygen in His lungs, He looked around at the people gathered there, thought about all the people who had ever lived, and all the people (like you and me) who would live one day, and He whispered one word in Greek, three words in English:
“Tetelastai!” (ta-tell- its-stai)
In English,it means:
“It is finished!” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
John 19:30
“Tetelastai!” (ta-tell- its-stai)
is the word merchants wrote on sales slips when someone paid their bill.
(ta-tell- its-stai) means, “Paid in full.”
Paid in full.
No more payment.
Nothing more ever needs to be done to atone for the sins of the world.

SUMMARY
SUMMARY
The story of the Bible is the story of a lamb, who was slain for the sin of the world.
Your sin.
And mine.
Permanently.
Once-for-all.
SEGUE
40 days after His Resurrection, Jesus returned to heaven, to be seated in the position of power and authority at the right hand of the Father.
In the final book of the Bible, the book of Revelation and you’ll find it saying,
Read Revelation 5:13
The story of the history of our planet ends with…
Revelation 5 – The Lamb is now in heaven, worshipped forever.
But the story of our species doesn’t end with the ending of our planet. Jesus reigns in Revelation 5, but the story continues to Revelation 22.
The final two chapters of the Bible say that one day, not only will the Lamb redeem our world, but He’ll create a new one.
Revelation 21 calls this, “The New Heaven and The New Earth.”
The New Earth will be an eternal city.
Rev. 21:23 says,

Friends, the culmination of the story of the Lamb concludes that
7. Revelation 21 – The Lamb will one day light the new heaven. and the new earth.
STORY OF THE MORAVIAN BRETHREN
During the Middle Ages, a movement of Christians started to grow in the land of Moravia, which today is in the Czech Republic.
The Moravians got serious about God.
In the 18th century they established a 24-hour a day prayer movement that ran uninterrupted for 100 years.
They sent out missionaries all over the world.
One of their stories is about two young men who heard of an island leper colony where no one had heard of the name of Jesus.
Leprosy was highly contagious, so no one who set foot on the island was ever allowed to step off the island.
These young men were determined to reach the lepers with the Good News of Jesus, so they convinced the delivery boat that dropped supplies on the island shoreline to let them ride along.
When the day came for the boat to leave, the Moravian Brethren gathered to pray over the young men and send them off, never to see them again.
There were a lot of tears and weeping.
And as the boat cast off its lines, the young men waved one last time and shouted, “May the Lamb who was slain receive the glory of His suffering.”
For 100 years, it was the battle cry of the Moravian brethren:
“May the Lamb who was slain receive the glory of His suffering.”
CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
Jesus allowed Himself to be led to the slaughter because He saw everything you needed and determined to pay it for you.
This is a Lamb you can trust.
Let Him into your life.
Let Him into your heart.
Let Him pay for your sin.
Let’s pray together.
Salvation:
Salvation:
The Word of God says in: John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
Lord I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
