We are studying the synopsis of the four Gospels.
50. Occasion of the Sermon (on the mount).
If you were to read Matthew and Luke independently you might get the idea that these were two different events. In fact may believe that the sermon in Matthew and the story in Mark are two different sermons That Jesus preached. One on the Mount, one on a plain.
As we continue in this study we will see the differences and similarities of these two sermons.
Also note mark also has Jesus going up on a mountain with his disciples…
51. Beatitudes
Only Matthew and Luke record the “Blessed are…” But there are some noticeable differences.
there are 9 blessed in Matthew and only 4 in Luke
Matthew says “poor in spirit” whereas Luke says poor.
Matthew says “hunger and thirst for righteousness” where as luke says just “hunger”
Luke adds woe’s for every blessed
52. Salt of the Earth
Matthew Mark and Luke all talk about Salt and losing it’s saltiness, but they all say it a little differently.
53. The Light of the World
All 4 Gospel accounts talk about the Light of the World.
Only Matthew says “you are the light of the world”
In John, Jesus says he is the light of the world.
54. On the Law and the Prophets
All three of the synoptics record “Heaven and Earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
Matthew and Look seem to be saying something completely different.
55. On Murder and Wrath
All the synoptics deal with resolving your disputes quickly. Matthew alone talks about murder and hate.
56. On Adultery and Divorce
Matthew and Mark both talk about removing the part of your body that causes you to sin.
All three of the synoptic gospels talk about divorce.
57. On Oaths
Only Matthew deals with Oaths so we have thing to compare it to.
58. On Retaliation
Both Matthew and Luke deal with turning the other cheek. But only Matthew talks about an eye for an eye.
59. On Loving One’s Enemies
Again it is Matthew and Luke who dive into the idea of loving your enemies.
A significant difference is Matthew 5:48 “48 But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.” compared to Luke 6:36 “36 You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.”
60. On Giving
Only Matthew talks about giving to the poor.
61. On Prayer
Only Matthew talks about praying without being noticed.
62. The Lord’s Prayer
Matthew and Mark both talk about the need to forgive others,
and Matthew and Luke both record how Jesus taught his disciples to pary.
63. On Fasting
Fasting on only found in Matthew so we will not address it but to say it should not e done to be noticed.
64. On Treasures
Both Luke and Matthew talk about treasures in heaven, Luke actually gives an example…
“Sell you possessions and give the money to the poor”
65. The Healthy Eye
Again we only find Matthew and Luke talking about. Some of the text is actually word for word.
66. On Serving Two Masters
We see also that Matthew and Luke discuss serving two masters, their wording is almost exact.
67. On Anxiety
Anxiety is also talked solely in Matthew and Luke, and if you read it, it seems to be almost word for word.
68. On Judging
All four Gospels deal with judging others.
John tells a story to illustrate his point, the woman caught in adultery is more than just showing Jesus compassion, it is showing why we should not judge.
The Synoptics all talk about the measure you use will be used on you.
Matthew and Luke go into taking out the Log in your own eye before taking the speck out of your brothers eye
69. On Profaning the Holy
Only Matthew records this so we have nothing to compare it to.
