And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples
John the Baptist is in prison at this point, he is in prison for the sake of of exposing Herodias for being with his brother Philip’s wife.
And John told him it isn’t lawful or right for you to have your brother wife. according to Lev. 18:16,20:22
Because John spoke up on behalf of truth he was thrown in prison and ultimately would be expecting some kind of future execution.
and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?”
The Coming One is a messianic title based on Psalm 40:7, 118:26.
I can picture John the Baptist in prison saying to himself, “If I am the forerunner of the Messiah and if Jesus the Messiah, “why am I in prison”?
I can imagine John the Baptist thinking when I was set apart for this specific position imprisonment wasn’t part of the deal.
“John needed reassurance and clarification, for he had expected the Messiah to overcome wickedness, judge sin, and bring in His kingdom.”
Earlier John bore witness of Christ now he’s doubting somethings. He said, Behold The Lamb of God who comes to take away the sins of the world”
John often doubted just like some of us, we doubt.
John the Baptist though a fervent prophet he struggled with doubting.
John the Baptist doubted weather or not if he should be Baptize Jesus.
In the greek it says “John kept trying to hinder Jesus from getting baptized.” He forbid Jesus from Baptizing.
But then John witnessed the heavens opening up, He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
John is expecting his impending judgement in prison and he’s doubting again and saying, “are you the The Coming One!”
John was wondering are You the Messiah or should we look for another One of a different character.
Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see:
Jesus told Johns disciples go and tell John the things you hear and see.
Go and give a testimony about your personal experience.
It’s almost like He is saying, “I don’t want you to take my word for it but I want you to experience me and convey what you have experience to John the Baptist.
Allot of times in Christianity we are content driven we want the content without the Life of Christ.
We embrace Jesus like we embrace philosophy, education.
Like I love the idea of Jesus but I’m not fond of the reality of Him.
Like the way of Jesus works for Jesus, but I’m not Jesus. But God wants us to embrace the totality of Who Christ is.
Like Just tell me what I need to know instead of experiencing who Jesus really is.
This trip for us in Argentina is a seeing and hearing experience. It’s a lived out experience of the reality of Christ.
When we go home we will go with a testimony of not what merely P. Stan has told us about Argentina. But about the reality of what Christ is doing in the hearts and the lives of the people hear, what we see and what we hear.
What do they hear and see?
The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
Jesus in His compassion He met John where he was at. He met John not just off the basis of ability with all these amazing things happening, but off the fulfillment of prophesy. The fulfillment of His word.
All these miracles that happened was to solidify the reality of His claims as the Messiah. Isa. 29:18, Isa. 35:4-6.
Jesus begins with the blind men receive sight- no miracle in the OT is recorded of the blind receiving sight and no miracle of the NT apart from Jesus has the blind receiving there sight.
But this is the most frequent healing miracle of any kind among the works of Jesus. He stood out as the healer of the blind.
Its almost as if these healing was exclusively for Jesus and solidified His messiahship.
The final item on the list is poor people, who have good news preached to them. The poor were important to Jesus, and they feature prominently in the Gospels.
And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”
The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.
“I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near; A Star shall come out of Jacob; A Scepter shall rise out of Israel, And batter the brow of Moab, And destroy all the sons of tumult.
