He came in humility, to rule through grace.
Matthew 21:1-3.
1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,
2 saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me.
3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.”
Mark 11:4-7.
4 And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it.
5 And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?”
6 And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go.
7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it.
Jesus has come to us. He has come to us in humility, ruling through grace.
If you do not know Jesus, Will you receive his rule in your life?
If you know Jesus. Will you continue to receive his rule in your life?
The disciples did. They obeyed by going to get the donkey and colt for Jesus to ride on. This would be like going and borrowing a stranger's car for Jesus, which was a little uncomfortable, to say the least.
Will you choose to obey Jesus, even when he asks you to do uncomfortable things?
It is often uncomfortable to share our faith. Will you obey him by bearing witness to his work in your life?
It is often uncomfortable to do the right thing when peer pressure is in play. Will you obey him by pleasing him rather than your peers?
It is often uncomfortable to rejoice in trials. Will you obey him and rejoice in his work through the trial you are facing?
May each of us embrace his rule in our life through our obedience to him, rooted in our love for him.
Matthew 21:4-5.
4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,
5 “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
Jesus always has a reason for our obedience. In this passage, it was to fulfill Isaiah 62:11 and Zechariah 9:9
11 Behold, the Lord has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to the daughter of Zion, “Behold, your salvation comes; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.”
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Jesus' name in Hebrew is pronounced Yeshua, which means “salvation”. Isaiah 62:11 could be read, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, Jesus (Yeshua) comes; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.’”
Jesus, our salvation, has come in humility, ruling through grace.
Will we receive / continue to receive him - our king, humble, riding a donkey (a symbol of peace, not war)?
In his first coming, he brought us peace with God through faith.
This faith is in his first coming - his birth, his death, and his resurrection.
To receive him, we must believe and receive the salvation that these things wrought.
Mark 11:8-10.
8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields.
9 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!”
Luke 19:37-40.
37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen,
38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”
40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
Many received Jesus with great joy, crying out, “Hosanna,” which is Hebrew for, “Please save us.”
May we, with one voice, worship Jesus our Saviour, Jesus our King, for he has saved us and is worthy of all praise.
Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of Yahweh (Psalm 118:25-26).
John 12:16-19.
16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.
17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness.
18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.
19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”
Jesus came to bring life and that life more abundantly. He demonstrated that by raising Lazarus from the dead.
Yet, he did more than that, because after he died on the cross for all sin, he arose from the dead, conquering sin and death once for all.
We, like the disciples, look back at these things and understand what Jesus has done in his first coming.
Jesus came and saved the world, despite the opposition. He is working in our lives, despite the opposition from within and without.
Jesus has come to us in humility, ruling through grace. Will you receive / continue to receive him, thus being ready when he comes a second time to judge the living and the dead?
Church, receive the salvation of Yahweh into all aspects of our lives.
