Psalm Reading

Psalm 74:1–3 “O God, why do you cast us off forever? Why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture? Remember your congregation, which you have purchased of old, which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage! Remember Mount Zion, where you have dwelt. Direct your steps to the perpetual ruins; the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary!”

Matthew 20:17–19 “And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.””
Matthew 21:1–11 “Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ” The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!…”
Matthew 21:12–16 “And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.” And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, “ ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise’?””

Sermon

Sabbath had taken place on Saturday
On Sunday Jesus and his disciples went up to Jerusalem for the passover as was his custom
John 11:18 confirms that they stayed in Bethany, 2 miles away from Jerusalem
Jesus on the way speaks for the third time about his impending death
Jesus heals people on the way to Jersusalem
2 blind men, when they gained their sight they followed Jesus
Matthew 20:17–19 ESV
And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.”
Jesus as previous times in his ministry demonstrates he pre-knowledge of events
He provides clear notice to his disciples of is going to happen over the coming days
Matthew 21:1–2 ESV
Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me.
Jesus tells the disciples they will find a donkey and colt tied up
A colt is unbroken, and never been ridden
He tells them to bring the donkey and colt to him
Matthew 21:3 ESV
If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.”
Jesus then states that if anyone should question the to reply simply
“The Lord needs them”
Jesus demonstrates again his knowledge of the people, their heart and even what their response will be
Matthew 21:4–5 ESV
This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
Matthew & John confirm for us that Jesus is fulfiling the prophesy of Zechariah...
Zechariah 9:9 ESV
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
“Your King”
Not a foreign king or a kind bent on his own aggrandizement at the expense of the people
One who had been commissioned to seek and to save
“is coming to you”
to benefit you
The King is meek, gentle, peaceful, gracious
arriving on a colt
The King is not the fulfilment of men’s dreams but of a specific Messianic Prophecy
He is both great and humble, exhaulted and lowly
He is the One who in this act, riding to his death, thus to victory
A victory not only for himself
but for His True people, those who believe in Him
Matthew 21:6 ESV
The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.
Luke recounts it took place as Jesus described
Matthew 21:7 ESV
They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.
They put their cloaks onto the colt, and he sat on them
The colt submits entirely to Jesus
Matthew 21:8 ESV
Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
The crowds see Jesus and acknoledge the prophesy
They put their cloaks on the road
They cut down branches from fruit bearing trees and spread the on the road (date palm branches)
Matthew 21:9 ESV
And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
They shouted out
“Hosanna to the Son of David”
Hosanna - suplication and adoration: Prayer and Praise combined
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
They failed to consider ...
Psalm 118 ESV
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Let Israel say, “His steadfast love endures forever.” Let the house of Aaron say, “His steadfast love endures forever.” Let those who fear the Lord say, “His steadfast love endures forever.” Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The Lord is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. All nations surrounded me; in the name of the Lord I cut them off! They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side; in the name of the Lord I cut them off! They surrounded me like bees; they went out like a fire among thorns; in the name of the Lord I cut them off! I was pushed hard, so that I was falling, but the Lord helped me. The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. Glad songs of salvation are in the tents of the righteous: “The right hand of the Lord does valiantly, the right hand of the Lord exalts, the right hand of the Lord does valiantly!” I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the Lord. The Lord has disciplined me severely, but he has not given me over to death. Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it. I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar! You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!
Isaiah 53 ESV
Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.
Zechariah 9:9 (reminder)
Zechariah 13:1 ESV
“On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.
Had they done so they would have recognised in Jesus the Messiah who saves His people from their sins
Matthew 1:21 ESV
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
Return...
Matthew 21:9 ESV
And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
“Hosanna in the highest!”
This acknowledges that the Messiah is a gift from God
Luke 19:39–40 ESV
And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
The pharisees asked Jesus to rebuke the crowd.
Jesus replied “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

Jesus weeps over Jerusalem

Luke 19:41–44 ESV
And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

Matthew 21:10–11 ESV
And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
The whole city was stirred up
“Who is this?”
“This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee”
Prophet - for he revealed and reveals the will of God to man
Matthew 21:12 ESV
And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons.
The temple court has been desecrated
Trading of live animals (approved by priests)
The could take their own but risked those being rejected
Not all could afford a lamb so could purchase pigeons or turledoves
Money changing at profit (from Roman currency to Temple currency)
Stench of live animals
Business for the Priests and Traders was profitable
Even the poor were being overcharged
Could this ever be considered worship?
Not hard to understand Jesus’ righteous indignation
Jesus drove them out, as he had a few years before, with a wip made out of cords that lay around
We know from several passages Peter had a sword as did another disciple for dealing with bandits and robbers
After fortelling of Peter’s denial that Thursday evening Jesus ensures they have two sword with them (Luke 22:35-38)
Jesus shows himself a Lord of the temple
Matthew 21:13 ESV
He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.”
First part quoted from Isaiah 56:7
Jesus contrasts it with the present condition of the temple
He punishes degradation of religion and insisted on reverence
He rebuked fraud, racketeeering and dishonesty
He frowned upon indifference toward those who desired to worship God in spirit and truth, by declaring that the temple must be “a house of prayer for all peoples” *Mark 11:17
Through this action, Jesus glorified His Heavenly Father
Matthew 21:14–16 ESV
And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, “ ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise’?”
Jesus then preceeded to heal the blind and lame who came to him
The chief priests and scribes heard what the crowd were saying “Hosanna to the Son of David!”
They were indignant and say “Do you hear what these are saying?”
Jesus replied “Yes; have you not read… Ps 8:2Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise’?”
This is why they wanted Jesus killed. He claimed to be the Messiah, the Son of God.
They were too fraid of the crowd to turn against Jesus at this point.
Have you acknowledged who Jesus is?
Or do you rebel against His claim to be the Messiah, the Son of God?
