Telos: The Heart of a Loving Parent
Information
Violations of Mosaic Law:
Younger son disgraced father. Stoning would have been in order.
Asking for inheritance was son declaring to father, your dead to me and I want whats coming to me.
Older son disgraced father- Should have spoken up. He receives double portion of what is left.
4. My son is dead, would have been how every Hebrew would have expected him to talk about his son.
Deuteronomy 21:20–21 NKJV
And they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.’ Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones; so you shall put away the evil from among you, and all Israel shall hear and fear.
Inspiration
Luke 15:22–24 NKJV
“But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.
Revelation

Father watches for son.

Faith is active and operates in the realm of expectation.
Luke 15:20 NKJV
“And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.
The community would have considered him an outcast. Father has to get there before accusers come.

Son realizes he has sinned against heaven first, and then his father.

Luke 15:21 NKJV
And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

The older son, was legally right to be angry. And unforgiving…But!

Luke 15:32 NKJV
It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’ ”
Application

This is how the Father God loves you!

He covers your shame- Robe

He declares you free from slavery- sandals

He gives you authority- ring

Transformation
Dealing with Prodigals:
Get Ready! Keep Looking!
Faith looks at the promises not the problem.
Deuteronomy 28:32 NKJV
Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people, and your eyes shall look and fail with longing for them all day long; and there shall be no strength in your hand.
Deuteronomy 28:41 NKJV
You shall beget sons and daughters, but they shall not be yours; for they shall go into captivity.
Galatians 3:13 NKJV
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”),
If your making it about you, Stop!
Ask the Father to help you be more like Him.
Your not ignoring that the pain is real, you are making about something greater than yourself.
They need to repent to God, and that should completely be our focus.
The older son calls for punishment, the Father calls for a party!

Get Ready! Get the robe ready, get the sandals ready, get the ring ready!

3 Questions:
What is God saying to you?
What are you going to do about it?
How can I pray for you?
