Introduction
Hello, this is Kenneth, and welcome to Dwell.
Today is Friday, June 6th. Thanks for joining us for today's Dwell Kids Daily.
Thanks for joining us for The Melodic Line for Kids.
For the next few minutes, I invite you to join me as we look to our Great King by opening our hearts to hear from Him through the words of the Bible.
Silence
As we begin, let us remember that God calls His people, young and old, to be still and know that He is God. Let's take a few seconds to calm and quiet our minds, so that we can hear him better.
Opening Prayer
Loving Lord, we delight in your counsel. Today, help our hearts be glad as we receive your words.
Passage
Today our passage is from 1 Kings 2 verses 1-4 (ESV)
When David’s time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying, “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, and keep the charge of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn, that the LORD may establish his word that he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.
Exhortation
David was a king – Israel’s greatest king. The question is, who tells a king what to do? Who has authority to command a king? Hold onto that question as we reflect on this passage.
In 1 Kings 2, King David has come to the end of his life – an eventful 70 years! His son Solomon is about to take David’s throne, and David wants Solomon to be a good man, so that he will be a good king. He tells Solomon to be strong and to show himself a man. How does he become a strong, good man? He keeps the charge of the Lord, of Yahweh, of God. He must do what God wants done. David tell Solomon that he must walk in the ways of God and obey his commands, his rules. But, how will Solomon know what God has commanded? David says it’s in the Bible, in the Torah, in the Law of Moses. A good man is a man who reads his Bible and walks in the ways of God and delights in the will of God. If Solomon does this, David says, he will prosper, he will flourish and be a successful man – and a good king.
So, who tells the king what to do? The King of Kings. That’s who. And when kings obey God, the High King of all things, they will be good kings because God is himself a good King. Is there a man in your life who functions like a king in your home? Then he must keep the charge of God, who is King over all, delighting in His will and walking in His ways. God doesn’t want weak men, men who ignore his commands, to rule over his people. He wants good, strong men who can say yes to God and no to selfish and wicked temptations. When you have a king over you that is obedient to God, it is a blessing for all.
Call to Action
Let’s take a moment to meditate on God’s goodness in this passage.
Closing Prayer
Let’s pray together.
Father in heaven, thank you for sending your saving Son, our great High King. We rejoice that he is utterly faithful in every way to your will. Jesus the true and good Man and we rejoice to call him King. We pray this in his name. Amen.
