The Triumphal Entry: A King Like No Other

The Triumphal Entry

12 On the next day the large crowd who had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

13 took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, “Hosanna! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, even the King of Israel.”

14 And Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written,

15 “FEAR NOT, DAUGHTER OF ZION; BEHOLD, YOUR KING IS COMING, SEATED ON A DONKEY’S COLT.”

16 These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him, and that they had done these things to Him.

17 So the crowd, who was with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to bear witness about Him.

18 For this reason also the crowd went and met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign.

19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing; look, the world has gone after Him.”

Point: How our expectations can blind us from the true purpose of Jesus.

What is the event that is taking place in this Passage?

Answer: Palm Sunday

In verses 12-13 what are the Jewish People doing? How are they welcoming Jesus into Jerusalem?

Answer:
Laying palm
Praising Him
Claiming Him as the King of Isreal
Acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah - MOST IMPORTANT

What are they saying that's showing they acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah?

In verse 13 “BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD”
This acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah and expressed both a cry for salvation and recognition of His ability to save them

BUT WE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THEIR EXPECTATIONS WERE FOR THE MESSIAH AND HOW IT BLINDED THEM FROM THE MESSIAH THAT JESUS REALLY WAS.

In order for us to know those expectations lets look at the meaning behind what they did when they found out Jesus was coming.

Palm branches

Historically, palm branches have been used to welcome kings and conquerors, and they were associated with military victories and a sign of hope in the person who is coming.
So looking at this historical meaning, What did the Jewish people expect Jesus to be when he rode into Jerusalem?
King / Ruler
Conqueror
Liberation from Roman Rule
Historically what do Kings/Rulers/Conquerors typically enter a city on?
Answer: Horses

Remember this when we look at how Jesus came into Jerusalem and what His true purpose was on earth.

Since we know the historical meaning behind Palm Branches and why people used them what do you guys this the word “Hosanna” means?

Literal translation from Hebrew is “Save, please”

Okay so now that we know the significance of Palm branches and what HOSANNA means.

Look back at verse 13, how can we reword what the Jewish people are saying to Jesus?

Hosanna = Please save us
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD= MESSIAH
Even the King of Isreal= the King of Isreal
“Please save us Messiah, the King of Isreal”

IN THE EYES OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE, WHAT IS THEIR EXPECTATION FOR THE MESSIAH?

King of Isreal and Liberator from Roman rule
That is all they expected from him. They expected Jesus to conquer Rome and be their King and ruler on Earth.

BUT knowing the events that took place after this, we know that this wasn't His mission or goal.

Now that we understand the expectations the Jewish people had for Jesus, we can see how it blinded them from a prophecy that was told 500+ years before Jesus was born.

1st Can someone tell me what a prophecy is?

The prediction of a future event
Zechariah 9:9 LSB
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Make a loud shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is righteous and endowed with salvation, Lowly and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a pack animal.

What is the significant difference between riding in on a donkey and riding in on a horse?

Horse is a signal of what?
Conquerors
Kings
War
If a Horse is a sign of those things then what is a donkey a sign of?
Peace
Humility
Service

So Jesus coming in on a donkey is a sign of his humility and service to his people. His mission was to bring Peace!

Has anyone here went to Jesus with an expectation?

What might your response be when Jesus does not meet expectations?
It is easy for us to reject Jesus when he does not meet our expectations
The Jews rejected him because he wasnt the messiah that they wanted him to be. They rejected him as their Lord and Savior because he didnt fulfill the role that THEY put him in.
But praise to God that Jesus’ mission did not meet their expectations. Praise God that Jesus was sent to atone for our sins and make anyone who believes in Him children of God.
So dont allow your expectations of this world to blind you from Jesus’ true Purpose.
He came to die for your sins. All of Gods wrath was laid on Jesus in order for us to be children of God.
Closing:
If you knew what God knows about your life, then you would choose his will everytime.
Meaning If I could see Gods big picture for my life right now, then I would always choose the path that he has made for me.
So dont allow the influence of this world to cloud your sight of Christ. Dont allow your expectations to blind you from seeing what Christ did for you. Instead trust that Christ died for your sin and put your faith in what God has planned for you, even when you cant see the big picture.
