Sermon Title: “Doing Our Best for God”

Main Scripture: Colossians 3:23
Colossians 3:23 ESV
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,

I. What does it mean to say something is Excellent?

Key Point: When something is the best version of itself

Illustration:

Excellent food
excellent project
excellent goal
Excellence means doing your very best with the gifts God gave you—every time, in every way, for God’s glory.

II. How do we be excellent?

Key Verse: Colossians 3:23 “Work at it with all your heart…”
We do it with all of our heart
We are motivated to be excellent
Proper Motivation for excellence matters
Matthew 12:34 ESV
For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

III. Why are are to be excellent?

Key Verse: Matthew 5:16 "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
Story: 2 Cupcakes
Point: When we work with excellence, people see something different in us—and we can tell them, “I do this for God!”
When people see us do something excellent it points us to who we follow.

Jesus Is Our Example of Excellence

Key Verse: Mark 7:37 "People were overwhelmed with amazement. 'He has done everything well,' they said."
Jesus is the greatest example of excellence
We cannot be Jesus, but we are to strive to follow him

Application:

Can you do your schoolwork for God?
Can you be a good friend for God?
Can you clean your room, play sports, and sing in chapel with all your heart?
"This week, ask yourself: Am I doing this like I’m doing it for Jesus?"
