Paul in ch 9 v2

that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart

Having stated the fact of Israel’s stumbling in the preceding verses, Paul now explained the reason for that stumbling.

Is zeal good or bad?

ZEAL—an earnest temper; may be enlightened (

v 3

what does Paul mean when he says “ seeking to establish their own righteousness?
I think Paul himself does best

Phil 3:4 -8

V4 think of end like the conclusion
Romans 2. The Cause of Israel’s Rejection (9:30–10:21)

10:5–13 In this paragraph Paul contrasted two kinds of righteousness. The first is the righteousness that has its origin in the law. Regarding this approach to righteousness Moses said, “The man who does these things will live by them” (

5 For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments

what does the statement mean? Paul is quoting from Leviticus 18:5 “You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the Lord.” Proverbs 3:1–2 “My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.Proverbs 3:7–8 “Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.”
nowhere does the law promise eternal life to those who keep it . the righteousness of Christ not only gives temporal life but eternal life. John 17:3 “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”
knowing Jesus is eternal life!
v6
Righteousness based on faith
faith
mouth
heart
these are inter woven they are like a circle

12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend to heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ 13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ 14 But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it. Det 30:12

Paul is saying that Christ is assessable to us he is just a breath away.
we are saved we are being saved and we will one day be saved.
Paul is speaking about our initial salvation their is no mention or baptism or repentance . Rom 2
Romans 2 ESV
Rom 2:6-8 He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. v11 Isa 28:16

therefore thus says the Lord GOD,

“Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion,

a stone, a tested stone,

a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation:

‘Whoever believes will not be in haste

V13 Joel 2:32 “And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.”
Jesus make this more clear in Mt 7:21
Matthew 7:21 ESV
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
V14 Now Paul enters in to a dialogue with his Jewish opponent with questions and answers
Of course the jews have not called upon Christ. How can they be expected to call on someone in whom they don’t believe?
Yet, it is not there fault that they do not believe. For how can God expect them to believe in someone of whom they have not heard ?
The reason the Jew have not heard of Christ is that no one was ever sent to preach about him.
Pauls answer Isaiah 52:7 “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.””
prepare and issue
How beautiful are the feet Heb 12:1
Hebrews 12:1 ESV
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
not only have evangelists been sent Jesus sent them
Isaiah prophesied about it.
The gospel of peace. Matthew 5:43–44 ““You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,”
3. The gospel is called the “gospel of peace” because it explains how men can have peace with God Romans 5:1 “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
V16 But all have not obeyed the gospel (opponent)
so their must be something lacking in the evangelists otherwise the Jew would all be obeying
(Paul) Isaiah 53:1 “Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
Hebrews 4:2 “For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened.”
John 12:36
When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. 37 Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, 38 so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” 39 Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, 40  “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.” 41 Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. 42 Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put shame the glory that comes from God.
so the Jews unbelief actually confirms the truth of the gospel

17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ

Paul asks another question v18 have they not heard?
many Jews actually saw jesus and they witnessed his miracles yet they did not believe him because they didn't pay attention to his teaching
gentiles came to faith because few saw him or the miracles from hearing the gospel. John 20:29 “Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.””
but i ask have they not heard? (opponent)
Paul if the ends of the world have then you have too your questions are weak
Paul must of been hearing these type of questions all over.
opponent v19 Israel did not know

19 But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says,

“I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation;

with a foolish nation I will make you angry.”

the opponent keeps insisting that Israel should be excused because they did not know he is saying that something must of gone wrong if the gentiles are believing and the jews are not
Paul things are going just as Moses said it would.

But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says,

“I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation;

with a foolish nation I will make you angry.

not a nation because it is all people we are called from all nations
foolish nation
worshiped other gods
world sees all Christians as ignorant 1 Corinthians 1:25 “For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”
i will anger you
the jews always get angry when they hear that the Law and the prophets belong to us who believe in Christ

20 Then Isaiah is so bold as to say,

“I have been found by those who did not seek me;

I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.”

Isaiah 65:1 “I was ready to be sought by those who did not ask for me; I was ready to be found by those who did not seek me. I said, “Here I am, here I am,” to a nation that was not called by my name.”

21 But of Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”

37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! 38 See, your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’ ”

conclusion : isn't amazing that Paul basically uses the old testament to defend the gospel .
