(2) Transition
Before I ask this week’s question we need to be able to see if we can answer it so we have a couple of test questions
If I were to ask someone here, “what is a cat?” what would we say?
We could say the cat is a mammal, maybe a predator, a quadruped - how about a four footed furry feline.
If I asked what ice cream is, we could say, delicious, frozen, sweet etc right?
So we know how to answer the question “What is something right?” Are you sure?
Here is tonight’s question: “What is God?” WAIT Whoa is that tricky or what? What is God? What do you think?
(1) Next Question
Q4 What is God?
GIVE THE LITTLES TIME TO ANSWER, DEBATE AND ASK WHY THEY SAY WHAT THEY DO AND WHERE THEY KNOW THIS FROM. ESPECIALLY IF THEY DONT HAVE A BIBLICAL ANSWER DRAW THIS OUT.
(2) Rehash Pt 2
If the purpose of people is to _______________ God and _______________ Him forever shouldn’t we know what we are glorifying and enjoying?
Perhaps question 2/3 gives us a hint - Q2 and Q3 tell us that we are to find our answers about God in Scripture
Doesn’t it make sense that we would go to His letter to us to find out what He is? Let’s open our Bibles and find out what God is.
(8) Define
1.) Spirit, John 4.24 ““God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.””
Do you understand what that means? May be say it back to me in different words?
God is Spirit, what is a Spirit?
A spirit is a living thing without substance, having the ability to think and feel.
Here’s an example if I lose a toe, am I still me? What if I lose a pinky? Am I still me? What about a foot or a leg - when do I stop being me? So it goes to prove the point that our body isn’t all there is of us, right?
Spirit, John 4.24 ““God is spirit (INTANGIBLE, ALIVE, ABLE TO THINK AND FEEL), and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.””
2). Holiness Revelation 4.8 “And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within, and day and night they do not cease to say, “HOLY, HOLY, HOLY is THE LORD GOD, THE ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS AND WHO IS AND WHO IS TO COME.””
Allow the kiddos to read and understand what is said - ask them to relay back what they heard
God is what? He is Holy - Extra Super Holy - unique, distinct, separate, apart, not like everyone else, without sin, morally pure, perfect, completely apart from all that is sinful
And what is cool is His Holiness defines everything else about Him. It underlies what is found in Exodus 34
3). Justice goodness and truth Exodus 34.6-7 “Then Yahweh passed by in front of him and called out, “Yahweh, Yahweh God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression, and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.””
Allow the kiddos to read and understand what is said - ask them to relay back what they heard
He is compassionate, gracious, patient, loyal in His love and always tells the truth - He is unchanging
(1) Q4 What is God?
A4 God is the only eternal Spirit - holy, unchanging, good and just
(3) Define - ask them to define what eternal is and supply additional information as needed
Eternal, without beginning or end (Revelation 21.6)
Completely holy, apart, separate from sin, morally pure, (Isaiah 6.3)
Immutable, without mutation, without compromise, doesn’t change at all He is the same forever (Heb 13.8)
Good is pleasant, pure, noble, honorable, worthy Psalm 119.68. God made all things good in Genesis 1.
Just, unable to make mistakes in judging Rev 16.5
(1) What are we glorifying?
So lets go back to square one…
What are we glorifying about God?
We are glorifying that God is eternal, entirely holy, unchanging, good and just
(1) What are we supposed to enjoy about God?
We will enjoy God’s unending infinite holiness knowing that He will never change and He is entirely good and just.
(8) So why does this matter at all?
What if God were not good? Could we glorify Him?
What if God were not just - could He make us perfect? What if God changed His mind like we change our minds - would we have any stability, what if He decided in heaven He didn’t like us - that would be scary right? God is the only eternal Spirit - holy, unchanging, good and just
Knowing what God is gives us comfort, stability, peace and enables us to trust Him with our eternity.
Knowing that God is eternal means He has always been around and always be around - He isn’t going to ever die or go missing
Knowing that God is Spirit gives us hope that when we are separated from our bodies we will not disappear
Luke 23:43 “And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.””
In fact we will eventually be given bodies like Christ 1 John 3.2 “Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not been manifested as yet what we will be. We know that when He is manifested, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is.”
Knowing that God is thrice holy, He will never lose His purity, His perfection and because He paid for our sins we can know that He paid for them entirely
Knowing that God is unchanging He will not go back on His promised blessings
Mal 3.6 ““For I, Yahweh, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.”
Knowing that God is good He cannot be evil or ever do evil
James 1.13 “Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.”
James 1.17 “Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.”
