Introduction

Have you ever experienced injustice at one time or many in your life? Maybe it was a coworker getting away with lack of hard work, but still reaping a reward or recognition. What if you witnessed someone you knew and cared about being bullied? What was your innate or knee jerk reaction? Revenge right? You wanted vengeance. Because vengeance means not only the wrong doer receiving a just punishment, but that you get to be the one to deliver it to them. We as believers know that vengeace belongs to the Lord (insert verse reference). Can you submit to the Lord’s timing and his plan for punishment? Our selfish nature makes that difficult, because in our minds we are trying to be the hero in our own story.

17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord

For we know Him who said, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY.” And again, “THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE.”

31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God

The Wicked Sons

12 Now the sons of Eli were corrupt; they did not know the LORD. 13 And the priests’ custom with the people was that when any man offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fleshhook in his hand while the meat was boiling. 14 Then he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; and the priest would take for himself all that the fleshhook brought up. So they did in Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. 15 Also, before they burned the fat, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat for roasting to the priest, for he will not take boiled meat from you, but raw.”

16 And if the man said to him, “They should really burn the fat first; then you may take as much as your heart desires,” he would then answer him, “No, but you must give it now; and if not, I will take it by force.”

17 Therefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD, for men abhorred the offering of the LORD.

V 12
We see that Eli’s sons were evil and did not know the Lord.
How did they get the job right?
V13-14
In Leviticus 7:29-36 we see how the sacrifice supposed to be done.
• Those offering a peace offering to the Lord must bring a portion of it as an offering to the Lord.
• The person offering the sacrifice must personally bring the fat and the breast:
• The breast is to be presented as a wave offering before the Lord.
• The priest burns the fat on the altar as part of the offering.
• The breast of the offering is given to Aaron and his sons.
• The right thigh of the peace offering is given to the priest as a heave offering.
• The specific son of Aaron who offers the blood and fat gets the right thigh as his portion.
• God assigned the breast and thigh to the priests permanently:
• As a statute forever for the descendants of Israel.
• Given on the day God anointed Aaron and his sons to serve as priests.
• This is their consecrated portion from the offerings made by fire, throughout their generations.
V 15-16
They interrupted the sacrificial process. They demanded raw meat before the fat was burned (which was supposed to be offered to the Lord first), showing disregard for God’s laws. Worse, they threatened to use force if people resisted.
V17
Not only did they sin against people they sinned against God Himself.
Abhorred is the past tense and past participle of the verb abhor, which means to regard something with extreme repugnance or aversion, to detest utterly, or to loathe. It is used to express strong feelings of hatred or contempt towards something or someone
And their sin was causing men to have an aversion to the offerings to God

Samuel’s Childhood Ministry

18 But Samuel ministered before the LORD, even as a child, wearing a linen ephod. 19 Moreover his mother used to make him a little robe, and bring it to him year by year when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20 And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, “The LORD give you descendants from this woman for the loan that was given to the LORD.” Then they would go to their own home.

21 And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile the child Samuel grew before the LORD.

V18-21
We see even as a child he was ministering to the Lord.
Could you just picture a 4-5 year old wearing an ephod.
The linen ephod is a biblical garment associated with priestly duties and worship in ancient Israel. It was typically a sleeveless, apron-like vestment made of fine linen and worn over other clothing. Its primary use was for religious service, symbolizing purity, dedication, and righteousness.
Hannah would make him a robe every year and bring it to him when they came and made their yearly sacrifices
Notice how Eli sees how Samuel and Hannahs faithfulness to the Lord. He blesses Hannah.
How does the Lord Respond to them being Faithful?
Hannah who in 1 Samuel 1 was said to have had her womb closed. Then has 3 more sons and 2 daughters.
Malachi

10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse,

That there may be food in My house,

And try Me now in this,”

Says the LORD of hosts,

“If I will not open for you the windows of heaven

And pour out for you such blessing

That there will not be room enough to receive it.

You cant out give God. Hannah gave Samuel to the Lord and the Lord in return gave her 5 more children.
What about Samuel?
Proverbs

6 Train up a child in the way he should go,

And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Our job as parents is to Train and raise up our children in the Lord.

Prophecy Against Eli’s House

22 Now Eli was very old; and he heard everything his sons did to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 23 So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all the people. 24 No, my sons! For it is not a good report that I hear. You make the LORD’s people transgress. 25 If one man sins against another, God will judge him. But if a man sins against the LORD, who will intercede for him?” Nevertheless they did not heed the voice of their father, because the LORD desired to kill them

V22
Eli is now very old and is now only rebukes his sons behavior
These men were sleeping with the women who assembled at the door.
this was an ancient version of a Pastor being caught in Sex scandal
V23-25
Eli’s ineffective parenting style involved excessive lecturing without taking corrective action. Parents should prioritize sensible actions and consequences over excessive lecturing.
You make the LORD’s people transgress. This was the great sin of Eli’s sons. It was already bad enough that they stole and indulged in their own lusts. However, their corrupt behavior also made people despise worshiping God with their offerings at the tabernacle (1 Samuel 2:17), and they even led women worshippers into sexual immorality.
God judged Eli’s sons by giving them what they wanted, not forcing repentance. God saw their corruption and desired justice.
God will not force himself on you.

26 And the child Samuel grew in stature, and in favor both with the LORD and men.

After Eli failed to parent his sons God raises up Samuel as Samuel grows in favor of the Lord and among men

27 Then a man of God came to Eli and said to him, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Did I not clearly reveal Myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house? 28 Did I not choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be My priest, to offer upon My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod before Me? And did I not give to the house of your father all the offerings of the children of Israel made by fire? 29 Why do you kick at My sacrifice and My offering which I have commanded in My dwelling place, and honor your sons more than Me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel My people?’ 30 Therefore the LORD God of Israel says: ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever.’ But now the LORD says: ‘Far be it from Me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed. 31 Behold, the days are coming that I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. 32 And you will see an enemy in My dwelling place, despite all the good which God does for Israel. And there shall not be an old man in your house forever. 33 But any of your men whom I do not cut off from My altar shall consume your eyes and grieve your heart. And all the descendants of your house shall die in the flower of their age.

A. A Man of God is Sent to Eli
• We don’t know his name—he’s one of the Bible’s many anonymous messengers.
• But his identity doesn’t matter; what matters is that he was a man of God, raised up to speak truth to Eli and his family at a critical moment.
B. God’s Reminder of His Covenant
• “Did I not clearly reveal Myself to your father’s house?”
• This refers to Aaron, the first high priest.
• Since the high priesthood was passed down through his descendants, Eli was in that line and shared in that sacred calling.
C. The Priesthood’s Sacred Duties (Summarized from 1 Samuel 2:28)
To be My priest: First and foremost, the high priest served God, not people.
To offer sacrifices: He offered sacrifices on the altar for atonement and worship.
To burn incense: Symbolizing prayer, the rising smoke represented the nation’s intercession.
To wear the ephod: His priestly garments (see Exodus 28:2) reflected God’s glory and beauty.
To handle the offerings: He managed and stewarded what the people brought to the Lord.
D. “Why do you kick at My sacrifice?”
• Eli could’ve said, “It’s my sons doing wrong, not me!” But he wasn’t off the hook.
• As their father and high priest, Eli had a double responsibility—and he failed in both roles.
• His sons served under him, and he let the abuse go unchecked.
E. “You honor your sons more than Me”
• By not disciplining them, Eli chose to please his sons instead of pleasing God.
• If he feared God more than his sons, he would have corrected them..
F. “I will cut off your arm”
• Not a literal amputation—“arm” symbolized strength and influence in Hebrew thought.
• God was saying Eli’s family would be left powerless and stripped of authority.
G. The Line of Eli Rejected
• God had promised a lasting priesthood to Aaron’s family (see Exodus 29:9), but now He removes it from Eli’s branch.
• This was fulfilled when Abiathar (a descendant of Eli) was removed as high priest by Solomon, and replaced with Zadok, from another line.
1 Kings 2:27
“So Solomon removed Abiathar from being priest to the LORD, that he might fulfill the word of the LORD which He spoke concerning the house of Eli at Shiloh.”
H. Judgment on Eli’s Descendants
• “There shall not be an old man in your house forever…”
• Eli’s family line would be marked by shortened lives and a lack of blessing.
• Those who did survive would grieve and bring sorrow, not joy.

34 Now this shall be a sign to you that will come upon your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die, both of them. 35 Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who shall do according to what is in My heart and in My mind. I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before My anointed forever. 36 And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and say, “Please, put me in one of the priestly positions, that I may eat a piece of bread.” ’ ”

A. “This will be a sign to you…”
• Because the full judgment on Eli’s family wouldn’t happen for many years (not until Solomon’s time), God gave Eli an immediate sign to confirm His word.
Both of Eli’s sons would die on the same day, proving that God’s judgment had begun and that His warning was real.
B. “I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest”
• God promises to bring a faithful priest—one who would do what’s in God’s heart and mind.
• This priest would be blessed by God, with a secure future and a lasting place of service.
Fulfillment of this promise came in stages:
artially fulfilled in Samuel – who lived righteously and took on a spiritual leadership role after Eli’s corrupt sons.
Partially fulfilled in Zadok – a priest during Solomon’s reign, who replaced Eli’s descendants in the priesthood.
Ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ – who is our eternal High Priest, not in Aaron’s line but in the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7:12–17).
C. “Those left in your house will beg…”
• A fitting consequence: Eli’s descendants, who once greedily stole from the offerings, would one day beg for money and food.
• Instead of enjoying the privileges of the priesthood, they’d be humbled and desperate—reduced to asking for a piece of silver and a bit of bread.
