What is Anger?

Cambridge Dictionary - A strong feeling that makes you want to hurt someone or be unpleasant because of something unfair or unkind that has happened
Anger is an emotion
It is considered a state of alertness or arousal
when angry your body physically changes (posture, adrenaline)
The Hebrew word for Anger is most commonly connected to the word meaning Nostril as in breathing hot air or smoke from your nose - Emotion
To be a patient person is to be a long nosed person
In Greek anger is closely connected with Wrath - Active function of Emotion
Anger is the only emotion in the old testament that is mentioned more times than love
Both God and Man possess anger (Anger is not a sin)
If anger is not a sin why are we talking about it?

Two Natures

Anger appears to us in many different ways but we can basically boil it down to Two main points
Righteous anger (Gods Anger)
Unrighteous anger (Anger Uncontrolled in the midst of mans sinful nature)

What does this mean?

Anger is a God given emotion
God is righteous in his anger (Tied to Justice)
Numbers 14:18 CSB
18 The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in faithful love, forgiving iniquity and rebellion. But he will not leave the guilty unpunished, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children to the third and fourth generation.
Context - Moses is making an appeal to the Lord out of Israels wickedness
God is low to anger but maintains his justice
Numbers 14:20 CSB
20 The Lord responded, “I have pardoned them as you requested.
Anger is good and something God possesses

Mans sinful Nature

Satan loves to take what God has called good and twist it up to mean something totally different
The problem is we have a perverted understanding of justice we cant understand our own hearts much less the heart of others!
For us Anger could be illustrated through the action of violence
Violence is a vicious destructive sinful thing when an evil person preys on the innocent (Think school shootings)
But when someone has forcefully opened my door at night or is breaking through my windows with the intent to harm my family suddenly violence is a very good thing

A ember to a raging fire

Proverbs gives us a very distinct image of Anger being something that grows and spreads at different speeds depending on what you do with it
Proverbs 16:27 CSB
27 A worthless person digs up evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire.
Scorching fire destroys everything in its path
Proverbs 17:27 CSB
27 The one who has knowledge restrains his words, and one who keeps a cool head is a person of understanding.
When i say that person is hot headed you all know what i mean once again this image of high heat or pressure
Proverbs 25:28 CSB
28 A person who does not control his temper is like a city whose wall is broken down.
Think of Jericho and the walls destruction
Proverbs 26:21 CSB
21 As charcoal for embers and wood for fire, so is a quarrelsome person for kindling strife.
Anger is the Core or starter emotion and anger can very quickly turn into rage and destruction
Think of when a fire starts in certain conditions it can be really hard to get a fire going but when a fire has started there's no limit to how fast it can grow into a blaze of heat as long as there is fuel and material to be destroyed
When anger presents itself we have to decide what to do with it
The Lord said to Cain before he murdered his brother Sin Waits like a lion at the door!
WE DON'T HAVE TO WALK THROUGH THE DOOR
I Jumping to my applications too early here so lets get a few more things out of the way first

Strife

Proverbs 30:33 CSB
33 For the churning of milk produces butter, and twisting a nose draws blood, and stirring up anger produces strife.

14 To start a conflict is to release a flood;

stop the dispute before it breaks out.

19 One who loves to offend loves strife;

one who builds a high threshold invites injury.

6 A fool’s lips lead to strife,

and his mouth provokes a beating.

7 A fool’s mouth is his devastation,

and his lips are a trap for his life.

The word for strife here is lawsuit or quarrel
Proverbs holds the highest use in an old testament book for the word strife it occurs 12 times
Psalms is the second with 7 occurances with 5x more
Anger produces strife and strife produces disunity
Is Fighting and a lack of unity not what the Apostle Paul spent so much time later correcting in the church?
Is Quarreling not what we witness often between the Disciples as they are literally there with Jesus himself?
And is it not one of the most common sins we find our-self partaking in today? (Gossip, Slander of character, High and mighty judgement)
Satan would love to watch the Church fall from us literally killing each other and he wouldn't have to even do anything he is not already doing!

How do we deal with Anger?

Tell story from last Sunday
There are many ways to deal with anger but here are just a few i think are worth mentioning
Patience
- A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise person holds it in check.
- A person’s insight gives him patience, and his virtue is to overlook an offense.
Insight gives us patience
We have self control
Fruit of the spirit

24 Don’t make friends with an angry person,

and don’t be a companion of a hot-tempered one,

Forgiveness
-His virtue is to overlook an offense
We cannot take the place of God only God says Vengeance is mine
We must forgive as God forgives us
We don’t have to forget the way we were wronged or pretend it didn't happen but we must choose to release to debt
Look to the Father
God is slow to anger
Be filled with the words of the Lord and his grace remembering what jesus said (Not what goes into the body but what come out that defiles )
Seek Gods strength for the strength we do not have
Seek his forgiveness in the midst of our own shortcomings

6 I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (Phil)

7 When a person’s ways please the LORD,

he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.

Prayer
Blessing

9 And I pray this: that your love will keep on growing in knowledge and every kind of discernment, 10 so that you may approve the things that are superior and may be pure and blameless in the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God.
