What do I believe God wants us to know? Jesus is King
Why? We need a good king to rule
What do I believe God wants us to do? Give up the throne and follow the kign
Why? We are not a good king and He is the best king
ME/WE
One of the desires and wishes we have from time to time is a desire to be KING.
Maybe not king of a whole country… but king of our own life. We have thought - “If I could just be in charge, make all the decisions, control everything—my life would be amazing.”
Why do we feel that way?
- Because deep down, we believe at times we know what’s best. - If we were in control, we imagine there’d be no stress, no problems, and nothing but joy—because obviously, we’d be great kings.
But here's the problem…
We're not actually that great at being kings.
We make choices we regret. We chase things that don’t last. We look back at some decisions and just cringe.
The truth is—we weren’t made to rule on our own.
WHAT WE DO THEN IS WE ELECT A KING
If can elect a king or president. That will solve everything, right? NO
All KINGS, LEADERS, PRESIDENTS fall short and fail us, even the best ones.
Was this even the way it was suppose to be? NO we were not have a human KING…who was to be king???
BUT WHAT HAPPENED?
1 Samuel 8:4–9 ESV
Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you. Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.”
1 Samuel 8:10–18 ESV
So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking for a king from him. He said, “These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen and to run before his chariots. And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his servants. He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and to his servants. He will take your male servants and female servants and the best of your young men and your donkeys, and put them to his work. He will take the tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves. And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”
This is not GOOD!!! WE HAVE SEEN THIS COME TO PASS, EVEN UNDER SOME OF THE BEST KINGS….WE HAVE KINGS
-WHY, because we were never meant to be KING
What hope is there for us??? We can’t escape it, until Jesus comes agin, the reality of human kings
PALM SUNDAY…gthe one that happened 2,000 years ago
How is Palm Sunday
THE DAY THAT JESUS MARCHED INTO JERSULEM ANNOUCING HE IS KING
AND THE WAYS HE DOES IT
He comes in a way we don’t expect —
- not with force and power, but in gentle humilty
- And He brings it in the most astonishing way, ruling with power far above the kings of the earth.
LET’S READ
WE ARE AT THE WEEK OF PASSOVER 2,000 YEARS AGO.
IT IS PILGRIMAGE FEAST, ONE OF THREE WHERE EVERYONE TRAVELED TO JERUSELEM.
OVER A MILLION PEOPLE…JOSEPHUS SAID AT ONE POINT IT WAS 2.7 MILLION
THIS WAS THE FEAST WHERE THEY CELEBRATED GOD DELIVERING THEM FROM SLAVERY…
LITTLE DID THEY KNOW THAT IN 7 DAYS JESUS IS GOING TO BE THEIR GREAT DELIVER
PICTURE OF THE CROWDS
PICTURE OF THE MT OF OLIVES and TEMPLE MOUNT
Matthew 21:1–3 ESV
Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.”
Jesus is on the journey from Bethphage to the Mount Olives about to ride into Jerusalem, about a 30 minute walk
Can you imagine you were one of the disciples
He then says to the disciples go into the village and immediately you are going to find a donkey, unite it and bring it to me.
Just go get this donkey? Just go untie a donkey that we are going to see?? yes
-If any asks why TELL them Jesus needs it
How would you feel?
THEY HAD BEEN WITH JESUS LONG ENOUGH TO KNOW IT IS JESUS AND HE ASKS THESE QUESTIONS FROM TIME TO TIME
Sure enough…you go and untie the donkey and what happens
Luke 19:33–34 ESV
And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”
THE OWNER JUST GIVE IT
The question is why does Jesus need the donkey?
WHY DOES JESUS NEED THIS?
Matthew 21:4–5 ESV
This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
Zechariah 9:9 ESV
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
How disciples respond to this Jesus fulfilling this prophecy? yep I saw it in Zech 9:9 I totally understand??
No
John 12:16 ESV
His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.
I want to show us that even sometimes when were close to Jesus we miss things, we need revelation of God to reveal things.
They are thinking, like mostly us
WHAT IS JESUS GOING TO DO WITH THE DONKEY?
He’s truly not going to march in as King riding a donkey??? Donkey? That’s a common animal , Jesus needs a war horse
People are going to make fun of you, people are going to riducule you
Can you image someone marching into Washington D.C. riding a donkey saying “I am King”
Maybe some will laugh
But this what was foretold the messiah would do
Jesus what we are SEEING doesn’t make sense. But this didn’t make SENSE, what they were dreaming and imagining was Jesus riding in a war horse, defeating Rome and the hard hearted religious leaders....
You are SAYING you are a king but you are riding a DONKEY
Jesus “I don’t know if you know this or not, kings ride horses”
DONKEY IS SYMBOL OF PEACE, YOU NEED A RODE HORSE!
IS JESUS GOING TO MAKE PEACE WITH ROME??? OR THE RELIGOUS LEADERS???
NO
What they did not see—what they could not know—is that Jesus was going to war. But not against the powers of earth. No, He came to conquer the powers of the air: sin, death, and shame. And through His victory, He would bring a peace no sword could win—a peace that would reign forever.
JESUS IS GOING TO WAR…NOT WITH ROME…NOT WITH THE RELIGOUS LEADER…BUT WITH OUR GREATEST ENEMY
SIN, DEATH, AND SHAME
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1 Corinthians 15:54–58 ESV
When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
NOT ONLY IS PUTTING DEATH TO DEATH
HE IS SETTING UP A NEW KINGDOM
Daniel 2:44 ESV
And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever,
DO YOU SEE HOW PEOPLE ARE RESPONDING??
They don’t know everything, but many believe He is the one who is going bring victory…
Three groups
Curious
Hopeful expectation
HOW DID THE PEOPLE RESPOND?
Matthew 21:6–9 ESV
The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
MESSIAH!!!

Cloaks on the road symbolized the crowd’s submission to Jesus as king (cf. 2 Kings 9:13). Branches (palms) symbolized Jewish nationalism and victory (see John 12:13). They were connected with prominent Jewish victories (e.g., 1 Macc. 13:51) and with the Festival of Tabernacles; palm motifs were common on both Jewish coinage and synagogue decoration

YOU ARE KING, YOU ARE KING, YOU ARE OUR KING
We submitting to you Jesus
We are putting our faith in you, FAITH mean we are putting our believing loyalty in you.
This is what it means to be follow of Jesus, it is complete alligence to Jesus
VICTORY has come, victory is here, NOT over ROME, but over DEATH, DEATH is loosing it’s sting!
A NEW KINGDOM HAS COME!
Not only that when are they throwing down cloaks and waving branches during passover week at the time the people who be singing
WHEN WERE THEY SAYING IT?
THEY ARE SAYING THIS AS THEY ARE SAYING THE SONG OF ASCEND AS THEY ARE ENTERING JERUSELEM
Psalm 118:19–29 ESV
Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it. I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar! You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!
Psalm 118:25 ESV
Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success!
Hallelujah!!
As this group is loud and hallelujah!!!!
Luke 19:37–40 ESV
As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
REBUKE, REBUKE, they are doing the right thing and if they don’t rejoice the rocks will cry out.
It’s in the midst all this going on rejoicing, Jesus marches in as king, that we SEE how big Jesus heart is for the world.
Luke 19:41–44 ESV
And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
He is wailing….deep cry!
I am coming to bring peace between God and man....
