Intro

Last time we meet we started this section of this leter to the corintans about spiral gifts, gifts the spiret gives belevers to help one onther, woship God and to peach the ghospel.
this section starts in chapter 12 and continues in 13 and 14, we wil start to dayin chapetr 13 and will end in the begining of 14.
Paul ended last chapter say he would show a way of life that is best of all. And we will see that this best way for all is love, Spirical Gifts in conjuction with Love.

13

(1) With speaking in tongues if there is no love its just meaningless sounds. With all spirical gifts if there is no love it because meaningless, because, what is the point of spirtal gifts? To strenthen each other, and to bild up th church. those goals are rooted in love so when you exurse gifts without love it defeats the whole purpose for the spiret givng it to indivials in the first place.
(2-3)
Do you see the theam Paul is talking about here we must have love with everything we do as a Christian or its meaningless.
(4-7)
Im sure you have head these verses before, very famous verses. i think for about a decade in the ealy 2000’s it was requierd to be read at every wedding i atended as a kid. and out of context what it says is true but in context what is it talking about? Pairing spiral gifts with love and then defining what love paul is talking about. and paul is using agape love, self sacrifical love. the type of love that is used to describe jesus sacrifice on the cross.
So what we can do is if we have a gift that has been given to us, do we pair that gift with the traits listed. and we will do that in the next verse
(8)
proficey, tounges, special knolege. Lets look at tongues if you have the gift of tounges, are you pationt are you kind, if you dont speak in tounges are you jellios, veres 4 says to not be jeluse. Postful or pound. if you have the gift of speaking in tongues are you bostful beuse love do not bost, are you pround of it becuse love is not proud.
People are so bostful that they speak in tounges like im more spiret filled then others even though paul said previusly not all will speak in tounges.
is that you with not just tounges any gift, are you bostful or pound of yourself regarding an ability you have been given. If you have been given the ablilty to lead and play music are you bostfull about that.
(9)
Even everything that has been ever reviled to use is (add)
(10)
What will as it says in the NLT will become useless. The ESV says pass away., CSB says come to an end. partial things will sease. What partial things, Gifts given to the spiet. proficey, tounges, exetra now a small amout cesationist(indiviuals who beleve the gift of the spirt have cesise) will use this to say that the gifts of the spirt have sesesed. and like i said its a very small amount that use this text the mojotity will not.
This vers dose say there is a time when the gifts will cesase but when is this time? when is it? The time of perfection
The time of perfection is when the gifts will become usless and pass away. Whats the time of perfection? Its should be clear that we are not living in the time of perfection. we are not even close.
After all the events of Revelation take place and we are in the new heven and new earth when theres no more pain, no more sickness, no more sin. in right relartionship with god thats the time of perfection.
So verse 8-10 is saying Prophecy, Speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge. These Gifts will continue within the body of christ till the time of perfection. so theres verses rigtht here are good evedence of continuation and that the gifst will not sease till jesus second coming.
(11-12a)
(12b). All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.
(13-1)
Faith
Hope
Love

14:1-5

(1)
So chapter 14 is all about speaking in tongues and the proper use of that spirical gift. there are 3 difrent uses of tounges that we see clealy layed out in scripure.
we will see two of them right here but before we do we will descues, the 1st one.
Speaking in tongues/an unknown laugage is when you the christian are able to speaking words that you do not know or should not know inpowerd by the holy spirit.
We see the first type/uses of tongues in the book of acts chapter 2, The day of Pentecost.

On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

The Holy spirit giving them the ability to speak in other languages.

em this ability.

5 At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. 6 When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.

7 They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, 8 and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages! 9 Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia, 10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!” 12 They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this mean?” they

What do we see here people from difent nations hered there native launguge it was a acuale languge that they new.

13 But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying, “They’re just drunk, that’s all!”

Peter Preaches to the Crowd

14 Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this. 15 These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that. 16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:

17 ‘In the last days,’ God says,

‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy.

Your young men will see visions,

and your old men will dream dreams.

18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit

even on my servants—men and women alike—

and they will prophesy.

19 And I will cause wonders in the heavens above

and signs on the earth below—

blood and fire and clouds of smoke.

20 The sun will become dark,

and the moon will turn blood red

before that great and glorious day of the LORD arrives.

21 But everyone who calls on the name of the LORD

will be saved.’

We see this type of speaking i tounges on the day of penticost. Type #1 as evangelistic tongues. Speaking someones languge that you do not know to spead the ghospel. Its would be if i spoke spanish to someone who only knows spanish. and God uses that for that person to be saved.
Type #1 now we will see here there are other types/uses of speaking in tounges. There are indivicals who belave spaeking in tounges is only this kind we went over but paul clealy descibes a difent kind of tounge here
(2)
Is the tongues Paul write in verses 2 the same type in acts chapter 2 were they talking only to God in Acts Chapter 2 No they were cleanly talking to others. In Acts Chapter were the tongues could people not understand them “since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.” Was it a mystery? No.
This is Type #2 A lot of the time its refund to as a privet prayer language. You Speaking words you do not now and its you talking to God as paul says.
Paul continues to describe it
(3-4)
“A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally” It is edifying to the person who is speaking in tongues,
If someone gets on stage and speaks in tongues it is not edifing to the belevers that here it. It dose not build others up. Paul says what dose. Proficey. proficey speaking Gods on behalf of God, Speaking Gods truth is what strenthines others.
(5)
Paul says he wishes that all the Corinthians could speak in tongues meaning not all of them did. Not every believer in jesus will speak in tongues.
Paul says proficiency is grater then speaking in tongues We went over why Speaking in tongues is edifying to the indivical who is speaking in tounges but niot to everyone else. Proficing on the other hand is edifing to everyone in the room not just one but all including the one who is proficing.
But there is a case when tounges is grater then proficing. Is if some one interprets someone speaking in tounges. And this is type #3 Public eduation of tounges with interpretation.
We saw earlier this gift listed in chapter 12:10 Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said.
Interpitaion of tounges is another gift given by the holy spirt. And Just like all the other spiral gifst not every belver is going to have this gift.

conclusion

we are going to stop here and finish the rest of chapter 14 next time we meet. And there rest of 14 Paul continues with the topic of speaking in tounges. But paul is going to go over the proper use of tounges. I hate to say it a lot of christans and churches are abusing the gift of speaking in toungs and the corhinatns were doing the same thing and paul corects them. So we are going to learn from there mistakes. So we dont do the same.
Before we rap up we are going to rewiew the types of speaking in tounges.
#1 Speaking a laungage to someone who knows that languge for evanjalistc perposes.
#2 Speaking in toungs in privet to God. In 14:14 Paul says For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying.
Praying in tongues to God.
#3 Spaking in touges in public with fellow belevers with someone using the gift of interpretation.
