2. 4 reasons why we shouldn’t fear?
Greeting
Opening
The title of my sermon is “Why are you so fearful?”
This question is asked by our Lord Jesus in 3 different gospel accounts.
Matthew 8:23–27
Mark 4:35–41
Luke 8:22–25
The account we will be using tonight is mark chapter 4
This is a story that a lot of us have probably heard taught on before, or maybe even a story that we have studied before.
But friends this story can bring so much application, encouragement, and peace to our lives
And I am so excited to be able to study this beautiful story and question of Jesus with you all tonight.

(Outline)
1. Mark 4:35-41
2. 4 reasons Why we should not fear
(PP)
1. Mark 4:35-41
Vs 35-36
35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him.
· Give context of Mark 4
At this point in the gospel of mark we see that Jesus has just recently began His ministry.
In chapter 2 we see Him heal and forgive a leper, and we see the pharisees confront Him about the sabath day.
In chapter 3 we see 3 mains sections.
We see Jesus heal a man with a withered hand, we see Him choose His 12 apostles, and speak in different parables.
And then basically most of Mark 4 is Jesus telling many different parables
So now we find ourselves in verses 35-41
“Read vs again”
So we see that Jesus and His apostles are about to sail across the sea of galilee
Vs 37
37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.
So the apostles and Jesus are sailing across the sea and this terrible storm ambushes them while their still at sea
Now I want us to look at the 2 ways that mark describes this storm
Waves are beating into the boat……. So that it was filling up with water
· Tell the story of daddy me and garrett at Felsenthal
But I can imagine the 2 different feelings that the apostles felt In that boat
Isnt it like that for us in our lives sometimes?
· The beatings we take
· The stress of the water filling up or the walls closing in
But no matter what was happening in that boat, the apostles should’ve taken comfort in the fact that Jesus was in the boat with them
And we’re gonna talk about that more in just a second
Vs 38
38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
Jesus was asleep in the boat
Theres 2 things I wanna notice about Jesus being asleep
· This shows the exhaustion of Jesus
· Have you ever felt like God has been “asleep” in your life
Then they said do you not even care that we are perishing?
Man……… have you ever felt like that before? God do you even care??!!
· My family member just died
· My cancer just came back
· Im going to have a heart surgery
And I’ve been praying and praying but nothings happening!
At the end of this story Jesus tells the apostle that they had no faith!
Why did the disciples not have faith in Jesus??
Its Bc they thought they were perishing!
They thought it was over!!
If the apostles would’ve had true faith in Jesus, then they would’ve believed that no matter happened in that boat and In that storm, that Jesus was their Lord and that He would take care of them, whether that’s physically spiritually
Friends aren’t we like the apostles sometimes?
We get wrapped up in this world and in its trials and hardships, and we think that we’re perishing! We think nothing can save us.
But our Lord Jesus can save us! And He will if we remain faithful to Him
If you’re here today and your following Jesus, and your going through a tough storm in your life rn….
Take comfort in the fact that Jesus is in the boat with you and He truly loves you
Vs 39
39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
There was a great calm! Jesus is the calmer of storms, the calm and peace that He can bring to our lives is so incredible its unexplainable!
(Philippians peace verse)
To have the peace that surpasses all understanding we have to trust beyond all understanding!
The disciples couldn’t do that in the moment, but we see that they learn from that! Peter eventually dies for Jesus! But it took them time and growth and maturity
Vs 40
They still turned to Jesus, but they didn’t have faith in His power
(Context) They knew who he was supposed to be and what He had previously done
We should look at everything He’s previously done, His love, promises, and faithfulness has been proven and shown to us in our lives and in others
Vs 41
This fear is a reverence for Jesus and His power
2.Reasons why we should not fear!
1. Jesus has overcome the World
John 16:33 “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.””
Jesus is still in the boat with us during our storms! (Livi says emphasize overcome!)
2. God's Perfect Love Drives Out Fear:
1 John 4:18: "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."
3. God has not given us a spirit of fear
2 Timothy 1:7: "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."
4. God Will Never Leave Us: (Jesus didn’t jump out of the boat in mark 4)
Deuteronomy 31:6: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."
Kieras comments
They were fearful bc they didn’t trust fully that Jesus was who he said He was

Bible Passage: Mark 4:35–41, John 16:33, 1 John 4:18, 2 Timothy 1:7, Deuteronomy 31:6
Summary: This sermon emphasizes the theme of fear and Christ's power over our fears, as illustrated by His calming of the storm, reassuring us of His presence and peace amidst life's challenges.
Application: This message can help Christians acknowledge their fears and understand that faith in Christ brings peace and courage, reminding them that God is with us in every storm we face.
Teaching: The sermon intends to teach that fear does not come from God, and through faith and reliance on God’s promises, we can experience His peace despite our circumstances.
How this passage could point to Christ: Throughout Scripture, Christ is depicted as the one who provides peace and comfort in the midst of fear. His calming of the storm reveals His authority over creation and serves as a foreshadowing of His ultimate victory over sin and death.
Big Idea: Though we face many fears and storms in life, faith in Christ assures us of His sovereignty and presence, empowering us to overcome fear through His love and strength.
Recommended Study: Consider exploring the various biblical responses to fear across the texts provided, focusing on how each passage reveals God’s promises. In Logos, study the different Greek and Hebrew terms for fear and their implications in the context, as well as commentaries on Mark's account of the storm to better understand Christ's nature and response to anxiety.
1. Mastering of the Storm
1. Mastering of the Storm
Mark 4:35–41
You could explore how Jesus' calming of the storm demonstrates His divine authority and brings the disciples from fear to faith. By focusing on His question, “Why are you so fearful?” you can suggest that acknowledging fear is natural, but faith in Jesus' power and presence offers peace. The disciples’ experience shows that Jesus is with us in every storm, inviting the congregation to trust in His sovereignty over life’s tempestuous moments.
2. Promises of Peace
2. Promises of Peace
John 16:33, 1 John 4:18, 2 Timothy 1:7, Deuteronomy 31:6
Perhaps emphasize the reassurances given by Jesus and God’s word against fear. Jesus’s promise of peace amidst tribulation in John 16:33, the assurance of perfect love casting out fear in 1 John 4:18, the gift of a spirit of power in 2 Timothy 1:7, and the call to courage in Deuteronomy 31:6, collectively underscore the biblical truth that Christians can face fears with confidence, anchored in Christ’s victory, love, and presence.
3997 The wise man in the storm prays to God, not for safety from danger, but for deliverance from fear. It is the storm within which endangers him, not the storm without.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (American Essayist)
Jesus is shown to possess power to still outward storms that threaten life and to still the inward storms of torment and grief that threaten our souls.
David E. Garland
trouble. But take heart!
Reading Mark helps one learn to trust in a Savior who does not deliver us from storms but through the storms.
