Introduction
Hello, this is Kenneth, and welcome to Dwell.
Today is Monday, June 9th. Thanks for joining us for today's Dwell Kids Daily.
Thanks for joining us for The Melodic Line for Kids.
For the next few minutes, I invite you to join me as we look to our Great King by opening our hearts to hear from Him through the words of the Bible.
Silence
As we begin, let us remember that God calls His people, young and old, to be still and know that He is God. Let's take a few seconds to calm and quiet our minds, so that we can hear him better.
Opening Prayer
The heavens were formed and filled by your word, O God. When you spoke the stars shone forth in the night sky. Help us hear your words today – shape our hearts according to your will. (from Psalm 33)
Passage
Today our passage is from the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 2 verses 8-14 (ESV)
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
Exhortation
Shepherds and Angels. I find that an interesting group. Beings of immense power and majesty, burning away the night sky, sent from the deeps of heaven, from the glorious throne room of God. They have made this journey to announce the royal arrival of the great saving King – God’s anointed son has arrived to save the world!
But how bizarre is it that these heralds take this royal announcement to shepherds out in a field? They didn’t go to King Herod, they didn’t go to the Roman governor of Judea, or the Roman emperor Cesar Augustus, they didn’t even go to the high priest in the temple. No, they went to dirty, smelly shepherds. Don’t you find that interesting?
You know we humans can sometimes (maybe too often) get things exactly backwards. We think that if you are rich, talented, and powerful then you must be special and more important than everyone else. But God doesn’t think that way. When he looks at the shepherds he sees immortal beings created in his image. They have just as much value and importance as any other human.
The way God sees it, these shepherds are a perfect audience for the royal proclamation. After all, the angel says that he is bringing good news of great joy that will be for all people. Jesus didn’t come to save special people, he came for all people!
Call to Action
Let’s take a moment to dwell on this bizarre, yet beautiful interaction between shepherds and angels.
Closing Prayer
Let’s pray together.
Father in heaven, you made humans in your image, in your likeness you created us. Help us to see ourselves and others as you see us. By your Spirit help us not fall into thinking some people are better than others. We are all made in your image. Thank you for sending your Son as a saving King for all people. We pray this in his name, Amen.
Outro
It's been great to be with you today.
Tomorrow, we'll be in 2 Kings chapter 2. Until then, go in peace, and let the word of King Jesus dwell in you richly.
Now, go in peace, and let the word of King Jesus dwell in you richly.
