1 John 2:25-29
Pray
Last week we addressed discipleship.
It is a condition of the heart, thank you Kevin for your help.
Thus morning we are going to continue in 1 John 2
Starting in verse 15
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
Why not love the world?
John is not telling us not to find enjoyment in life.
He is telling us to be careful to not love the things in this fallen world.
Do not love the things that have the potential to take your eyes off of Jesus.
Don’t love the things that distract from Jesus.
Or cause us to forget that we are to be disciples of Jesus.
John clarifies his intent by listing the things that can cause us to forget who we are called to be.
Lust of the flesh, eyes and the pride of life.
Chasing after the lusts of our flesh will blind our eyes to the path we are to walk as people of faith.
These desires do not come from God.
They come from the enemy who wants to entice us to be driven by the flesh so that we forget God.
Chasing after the lusts of the flesh leads to spiritual death.
But whoever follows the will of God is promised eternal life.
Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
We are in the last hour.
The last of the last hour.
John tells us how to know we are approaching the day of the Messiah’s return,
There are many antichrists who have come.
This is not speaking about the final antichrist warned about in the book of Revelation.
John is referring to people who intentionally distort the Word of God for personal gain
An example in the Bible is Simon the Sorcerer.
Acts chapter 8 records this account:
There was a man named Simon in Samaria who could perform magic
He drew the attention of many living in Samaria because of his magic arts.
The Gospel was preached in this area by Philip.
Many people came to faith in Jesus, baptized and delivered from the deception.
Simon himself came to believe, but his belief appears to be in pursuit of his own interests.
Simon saw the miracles done by the Disciples and he wanted them for himself.
To use according to his own purposes.
Simon offered the disciples silver to be given the Holy Spirit.
But the intentions of Simons heart were revealed at the rebuke of Peter.
Peter reveals that Simon is driven by wickedness because he only wants to receive the Holy Spirit for personal gain.
We see this in the church today.
People twisting the Word of God for personal gain.
We continue to see this taking place in the church today.
Just as John said, there have been many antichrists and more are yet to come.
More people will attempt to twist the Word of God to build themselves up.
But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth. Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
We are covered by the authority of Jesus.
And we have been given the truth.
The truth is given to direct out path so that we can be delivered form lies.
John says the liar is the one who denies Jesus as the Messiah.
It is this denial that reveals the spirit of antichrist.
The spirit of antichrist is fueled by rebellion and pride.
As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.
John gives us responsibility to hold fast to the truth that has been revealed to us.
Remain or abide in the Word of God as the foundation for life.
Abide in Jesus and the hope of Jesus will abide in us.
And this is what he promised us—eternal life.
what is the promise of Jesus?
I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.
John gives us this warning to
but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
the Holy Spirit gives us guidance
And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming. If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.
Abide in Him
Right in the context of God’s definitions
Benediction:
