David Vs Goliath
1 Samuel 17
Intro
So I am 18 years old
I just graduated last school year
And one of the things i regret the most is that I cowered away from sharing the Gospel to one of my friends
That was a big struggle for me
I struggled with that more than I should have
I struggled with having confidence in the Lord and depending on Him
Confidence
This would have all been avoidable if I had Confidence in God
Scary Shows and Scary Houses story
I like to think i like them
i got talked into doing the scarier one
I chickened out
I had my confidence in the wrong place
But when David goes to fight Goliath his faith is not in himself
And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.”
When you start to have confidence in the Lord the Enemy is going to put up barriers for you like Saul
Saying your not old enough or skilled enough
If we skip down a little we see where Davids mind is and where he gets his confidence from
But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
This shows us where David gets his confidence
In the Lord
He’s not worried about how big Goliath is
or any of the other difficulties
He compares him to Lion or Bear
The Lord has delivered him from those before
He has so much confidence in the Lord that without hesitation he was willing to go to war
His love for God was shown here
These are God’s people hes talking to and David is not having it because he loves the Lord
But the key here is how David kept his conf in the Lord
His remembrance of how the Lord had rescued him before
That is how we should be
we don’t fight bears or lions
He has delivered us from the grip of the enemy and the grip of death
He gave his son for us the ultimate sac
If God’s willing to do that I can have confidence in him
Another one could be a difficult time you’ve been through
But that is how David had conf in the Lord his remembrance
Dependence
But from that conf you have to depend on the Lord
Story of me depending on steven
once we went into the haunted house I thought I would lead the group
I did not I made my friend do it
I was so confident i could do it
But untimely I had to lean on and depend on my friend to lead the way
Dependence starts at the moment of salvation by understanding that we bring absolutely nothing to the table

Jesus is the only way for us to get to heaven and we have to have a dependence that Jesus can do that for us

to visit back to my story in the beginning about how I was too scared to share the Gospel in middle school here Matthew
this was a verse that was brought to my attention a little while ago
i think that if i realized this verse when i was making these excuses that it would help give me confidence to depend on God in moments when I think I might not be able to
You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
We do not speak the Holy spirit does
V 20 tells us this
The spirit that raised Jesus from the Dead
God will give us what we need to say when we go out and share the Gospel we just have to be willing to do it
We just have to be a living sac
we have to have a dependence on God just like David does in
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
David is depending on God in that moment David isn’t saying that he can do it Davids not being full of himself
a couple of chapters back he was anointed as future king so it would make sense if he was full of himself
David knows where his power is
which Davids response to Goliath shows the difference in the battle strategy
Goliath is depending or relying on his earthly weapons such as his Sword, spear, and javelin
David fights in the name of the Lord and the authority of the LORD
Glory
David keeps depending on God and gives him Glory
throughout the whole story of David being anointed and him facing Goliath we see him giving the glory to God not himself
It is never David is going to do this David never says I alone am going to defeat you
It is always the Lord will defeat you the Lord has delivered me
we need to realize that the Lord is the one who gives me victory not myself
If You are depending on Yourself to get us to Heaven then you are in for a rude awakening when you realize that you will fall short every time
Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.”
right before David goes into one of the most impact full wars ever in my opinion this battle was in 1022 BC
but before he goes into it he gives all the glory to the Lord he tells Goliath that the battle is the Lord.
This is not my Battle But The LORDS BATTLE
HE will get me though this
when he does he gets all the glory not me
Closing
today maybe you need to start having more conf in the Lord
maybe you need to depend more on the Lord
Maybe you need to be saved please come and talk to someone
