Intro
Are you at peace today? Peace with God? Peace with others? Do you know what peace is?
Need:
Some of us can’t function unless everything is peaceful. Heart can’t handle things stirred up all the time.
Some of us can’t function when things are peaceful. Hearts need to have something to fix.
Either way, we don’t have a great relationship with peace. If we define peace our own way, we try to bring peace our own way. We can’t bring ourselves peace. Only can, and he comes as king.
Main Idea: The King of Peace Has Come
Skipping ahead in Luke. We will enter into the final week of the life of Jesus. Holy week. Week begins with praise leads to resurrection.
Luke 19:28-40
Truth #1: The King of peace brings peace to the kingdom (28-36)
Exp. Story that you are familiar with. The imagery of peace is all over this text. Jerusalem = foundation of peace. Geographical (picture on screen). Mount of Olives. Kidron Valley. Eastern Gate. Garden of Gethsemane. Sent the disciples to grab a donkey. Verse 31. God has need for it. That’s exactly what happened. The owner asked why they wanted it. Verse 34-35.
Ill. Someone in charge. TV’s in youth building. Jerry’s word brought the change. Jesus’ authority supersedes ownership.
Arg. Why a donkey? Horse for war. Donkey for peace. Jesus is entering the city of peace on the animal of peace. Actually displays Zechariah.
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Humility. Peace.
4 On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward.
Standing on the Mt. of Olives.
11 And it shall be inhabited, for there shall never again be a decree of utter destruction. Jerusalem shall dwell in security.
Christ - Jesus is the king fulfilled in Zechariah 9 & 14. He is the one who brings peace. His peace is not for Jerusalem. Verses 41-44 are about the coming destruction of Jerusalem. His peace is an internal peace that leads to ultimate peace in his coming kingdom. The war that wages is the war with sin. Luke 23, he’s crucified as “King of the Jews.”
App. His kingdom is one of peace. And it lasts forever, rest in that.
Rest in his peace. Philippians 4:6-7.
Give to the Lord what’s his. If God asks you for something you have, will you give it to him?
Truth #2: The kingdom worships the King of peace (37-40)
Exp. The response to Jesus is nothing but worship. Verse 36-38. Spread their cloaks. 2 Kings 9:13
13 Then in haste every man of them took his garment and put it under him on the bare steps, and they blew the trumpet and proclaimed, “Jehu is king.”
Exp. Homage to king of Israel. Multitude of disciples rejoice and praise God. King who comes in name of the Lord. Peace in heaven. Luke 2, Peace on earth. Jesus says Jerusalem won’t have peace. Peace reigns in heaven. Why? His throne is not here. It’s in heaven.
Ill. Wedding. Bride and groom don’t live at venue. That’s just where the party is. They eventually go home. Jesus’ reign is not in Jerusalem, but in heaven. That’s why there’s peace.
Exp. They still worship. Verse 39. This was defiant to Roman government and blasphemous. Jesus responds. Verse 40. If my disciples didn’t worship me, my creation would. The king is here. The angels worship me, disciples worship me, creation worships me. Psalm 19:1
1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Exp. Why would creation cry out? Because creation longs for redemption.
Christ - Jesus miracles have led people to glorify God, and now they glorify him. This moment was about the fulfillment of God’s plan. Creation glorifies the work of his hands! Multitude of angels, multitude of disciples, leading to multitude of nations. He is the bringer of peace who sits on the throne. All we will know is peace.
App. Worship Jesus. (measures)
Praise him for peace with God. Defeat of sin.
Praise him for peace with others. United in Christ.
Let’s sing and worship him together.
