He Was Coopted as a Political King
And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
Cloaks and Branches Served as recognition of royalty
They had a love for what they thought a king would do
Hosanna - “Save Now” Ps 118:25 Thanksgiving Psalm
the crowds expected an immediate kingdom
Mark is a little more sober about this than the other gospels
Matthew - Crowds were stirred

English Standard Version Psalm 118
25 Save us, we pray, O LORD!
O LORD, we pray, give us success!

2. He Mocked as a False King
Mark 15:16–20
16 And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. 17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.
Playing with Jesus Like a cat plays with a Mouse
Clothed him with a purple robe on hi bleeding back
Put on a crown of thorns
“Hail King of the Jews”
Beat him with a staff
Struck Him on the head
Soit on Him
“Hail King of the Jews
Taking off the purple Robe - ripping away the dry blood
According to John - One last appeal by Pilate - The crowd - “Crucify Him”
3. He Brought Victory as the True King
And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
Darkness for 3 hours
Exodus 10:22-11:9
The ninth plague was followed by three days of darkness - It was the death of the firstborn
Jesus is the first born of God dying at Calvary
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
Some say God hid His face - but look at what it says later in the Psalm
English Standard Version Psalm 22
I will tell of your name to my brothers;
in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
23 You who fear the LORD, praise him!
All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him,
and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or abhorred
the affliction of the afflicted,
and he has not hidden his face from him,
but has heard, when he cried to him.
Jesus felt the abandonment but He experienced God’s power
Jesus gave a loud cry - Very unusual for one dying of crucifixion
It was a cry of victory!
Hope Thoughts
We tell God what we want but He knows what we need
We can not obtain glory by making Jesus our servant
We are called to victory through the cross
