46 And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.” And having said this, He died.
Introduction
This worship experience is a threefold breakdown of:
God’s Predestined Purpose: Why (Reason Jesus Came)
God’s Process: God’s will (Sacrifice of God The Son)
God’s Power: God’s word fulfilled
But, Jesus didn’t just die, He finished the work given to HIM. He didn’t die as a victim, but laid His life down with power and purpose. Pushing himself up through the suffering Jesus spoke words of finishing strong. This moment isn’t the end of HIS story, but a close of a chapter; while recognizing this as a declaration of divine trust, redemption fulfillment and spiritual victory. This is a call to serving the LORD well and entrusting your eternal security in the FATHER. Because, we serve a God who manages our earthly lives and our eternal ones.
Total Control
Total Control
When Jesus cried out on the cross, this wasn’t a whimper of a helpless man. He wanted the world to understand He died as the sovereign LORD who willingly gave up HIS life. The entire journey to and through the deaths’ process, Jesus was in total control. From the infamous statements of Jesus on the cross were not just conversations and interactions; they were confirmations of why Jesus came.
HIS
Word of Forgiveness shows that He came to forgive
Word of Salvation shows HE has the power to save
Word of Affection shows HIS undying Love for HIS creation
Word of Anguish shows HIS predestined suffering
Word of Suffering shows HIS trust in the FATHER
Word of Victory shows HIS fulfillment of all the Messianic prophecies
Word of Contentment shows HIS total trust
HIS suffering and, HIS experience being separate from the FATHER; Jesus declared in HIS sovereignty (READ with purpose) “IT IS FINISHED”! The significance of this boast of a defeated foe and enemy of God made Christ statement in the text powerful. This is why we can boast in the LORD GOD understanding that our sin debt is PAID IN FULL; and our encouragement to follow Christ in complete faith and trust.
True Comfort
True Comfort
Can I point out an interesting fact? The LIVING word, used the written word to provide comfort to himself.
God is complete in HiS divine nature and no one could offer comfort to HIM but, HIMSELF.
John 1:1–2 “1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.”
Matthew 24 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
Jesus Christ the God-Man, an eternal being, spoke eternal words to console HIMSELF. (That’s why our words matter)
Jesus at this moment began to cite King David. Psalm 31:5 “5 Into Your hand I entrust my spirit; You have redeemed me, Lord, God of truth.”
The difference between the two text is that Jesus included the First person of his Divine nature, The FATHER. “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.”
This text also points out the relationship with the FATHER and is similar to when Jesus declared Matthew 27:46 “eli, eli, lema sabaktanei?” that is, “my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” The relationship was always present and Jesus at no point ceased being GOD but modeled comfort and intentional trust in the FATHERS plan.
The fulfillment of HIS very own prophecy came true when Christ said in…
17 For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it back. 18 No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it back. This commandment I received from My Father.”
This demonstration of faith is not just a Vertical testimony but Horizontal. This show us that as children of God whatever assignment God has given us to do we are to carry it out with every intention of finishing strong even if it means our lives. Since Christ was the bearer of humanities sin, what level of commitment should we demonstrate as justified believers of GOD?
1 Peter 2:23
23 and while being abusively insulted, He did not insult in return; while suffering, He did not threaten, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously;
1 I said, “I will keep watch over my ways So that I do not sin with my tongue; I will keep watch over my mouth as with a muzzle While the wicked are in my presence.”
The Considerations
The Considerations
Have you considered
At the lowest possible moment Jesus never lost sight of finishing the assignment of HIS death on the cross
At the lowest possible moment Jesus found solace in the process of the crucifixion by demonstrating forgiveness, offering salvation, and love while the world continues to ridicule HIM. (Punch Point) If You’re last words in suffering has to come out your mouth offer words of forgiveness, hope of salvation, and love!
At the lowest possible moment Jesus ministered consistently, carrying out the will of the father.
At the lowest possible moment Jesus quoted scripture as comfort, talking to the only one who comforts us completely, The FATHER.
At the lowest possible moment Jesus kept the faith in perfect obedience
At the lowest possible moment Jesus trust in the FATHER transcended HIS pain
Questions
How are we matching up to Christ this morning? When we are at our lowest, are we at our best?
9 And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
At Christ lowest possible moment Jesus hypostatic union with the Father and Holy Spirit was in perfect control. (Jesus is simultaneously fully God and fully man at the same time meaning absolutely nothing about this moment was accidental or in control of man)
