The gift of renewal.
It’s amazing to me the pieces God can put together. I want explain the Palm Sunday was actually written 500 years prior to it’s fulfillment
Zechariah 9:9 ESV
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
In this 500 Year old Prophecy there is a list of attributes that Jesus has. He is righteous- Lived a sinless life. He is humble—he doesn’t think to highly of himself, but I want to point out the idea oof having salvation. Many people think the Jesus came to bring salvation—Jesus is salvation. Even now he intercedes on our behalf to God. He is continually saving our butts. He isn’t a way to salvation. He isn’t part of the process
John 14:6 ESV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
He is the way. His entire being. This is important here because
The whole problem with palm Sunday is that the jewish people wanted part of who Jesus was when Jesus came to give all of himself.
This is the begging of the end for the new beginning. Jesus is about to fulfill the Levitical Law- which is the fulfillment of price paid for our sins. Every debt has a bill. The idea is that if you are a good steward of your finances we don’t accumulate a financial bill we can’t pay. However, there wasn’t a perfect payment process for sin. Some people believe in Karma. What goes around comes around, but this isn’t always true. Karma isn’t a 100% trade off and who is to determine the price one should pay for the offense? When did Karma do it’s job?
The world didn’t have a perfect system to deal with sin. Even the jewish sacrifices had to be repeated every year. In order for there to be a perfect sacrifice there had to be someone or something perfect to sacrifice.
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
I love the verbiage here, because the wages of sin- wages have to be earned. I don’t get a paycheck to do nothing. I earn what I make. What we earn when we do evil or we sin is death. There has to be a pay out.
But the gift of God- Gifts, like says are free. I don’t give you a gift with a bill of sale.
So Jesus rides in on a Donkey—why? Because everyone was expecting militant Jesus when Jesus came to represent peace. This is why I said they only wanted part of Jesus.
The Jewish people lay down Palms
Leviticus 23:40 ESV
40 And you shall take on the first day the fruit of splendid trees, branches of palm trees and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God seven days.
Palms were a symbol of victory and rejoicing/praise. This is called a wave offering. They would take these branches and wave them around as a sign of praise.
But I want to show you the sorrow of Palm Sunday because we have to know the sorrow in order to enjoy the praise.
Luke 19:41–44 ESV
41 And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side 44 and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
Jesus came in much like the Prophet Jeremiah weeping for the destruction of the Jewish people that wouldn’t happen until 70 AD when the Romans destroy Jerusalem which wouldn’t be rebuilt until 1967 when Israel retook it. After 1984 when Israel finally was restored to a nation.
Jesus is weeping aloud this isn’t a quiet cry because the people of Israel, God’s chosen people, are going to reject him. And this rejection still goes on into today.
When Jesus looked around he saw religious activity, but he didn’t see freedom.
Religious activity doesn’t equal salvation. Jesus said this is a free gift to all who desire to receive it and live it out.
John 1:11 ESV
11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
Jesus is the only way—He is weeping because His people are rejecting him.
The firs thing Jesus does in
Luke 19:45 ESV
45 And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold,
This is a prophetic act because the first thing Jesus did was make room for people to worship. He made room for relationship. He made room for us.
When Jesus enters in he makes room
He clears our the sin, the guilt, and the shame and he makes room for us.
John 14:3 ESV
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
This isn’t just a future heaven Jesus is talking about. Good Friday is coming and we will dive into this more, but Jesus went to make room, not only in Jeaven, but when he died he made room for us to live for him today. He doesn’t just provide you opportunity
Jesus makes sure you have a place.
