James 1:13–15 NIV
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
Source of Temptation
James 1:13 NIV
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;
temptation is a real occurrence
we are constantly being tempted
wrong thinking in blaming God
do we get angry with God?
Nature of God
must know the nature of God
God is good, and all the time ....
words of Jesus
Matthew 7:11 NIV
If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
God give good gifts
so bad things do not come from God
it can be said that God allows temptation
Story of Job
very instructive
Job 1:10–11 NIV
“Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”
Satan complains about the righteous man
Job was protected by God!
put evil onto him and he will sin
Job 1:12 NIV
The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
God allowed the evil to happen
Satan was the source of evil
Satan always will be the problem
man has free will
given by God
God does not go against his decisions
Job 2:9 NIV
His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!”
the wife had enough
world view - blame God
Evil Desire
James 1:14 NIV
but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.
here is the real cause
man allows his own evil desire to dominate
the thought comes
the temptation comes
and man gives in
constantly bombarded by the forces of darkness
constantly overwhelmed with worldly influences
we are programmed to sin in our old self
Proverbs 19:3 NIV
A person’s own folly leads to their ruin, yet their heart rages against the Lord.
Sin to Death
James 1:15 NIV
Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
there is a pathway to death
we all follow it
it took Jesus to take and pay for our sin
in order for us to break this nexus of temtation and sin
The Pathway to Death
the temptation comes
an idea is onsolidated - desire is conceived
the idea is now put into a plan
the plan is actioned - sin is done
sin begats sin - sin nature grows
death is the payment for sin
Romans 6:23 NIV
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The Pathway for Life

sin - seek forgiveness 1 John 1:9
he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins
