CALL TO WORSHIP
CALL TO WORSHIP
Let’s pray in meditation.
The true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
Oh, Lord our God! Be with us in our worshiping place so that we may worship you in spirit and truth.
CONFESSING SIN
CONFESSING SIN
Our Father we confess that we did not love you with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our mind and with all our strength and that we did not love our neighbor as ourselves. Forgive us our sins and cleanse us with the blood of Jesus.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Todays’s text was written by king David about a thousand years before Jesus’ suffering. This psalm is a kind prophesy of the suffering of Jesus.
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them.
“My God, my God, wha have you forsaken me?” This question was same as the question that Jesus spoke on the cross.
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts. On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother’s womb you have been my God. Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help.
Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me; they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion.
This prophesy was fulfilled in the 1st century.
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him. And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him.
And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying,
“He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.
Let’s go back to David’s psalm.
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast;
Let’s compare this with John’s testimony.
Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him.
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.
Let’s go back to psalm 22:15.
my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death.
After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.
There is another prophetic psalm.
They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet— I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
When you read this what do you imagine? Is it not the prophesy of Jesus’ crucifixion? This psalm had been written about a thousand years before Jesus’ crucifixion.
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,
But you, O Lord, do not be far off! O you my help, come quickly to my aid! Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog! Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!
I will tell of your(sing.) name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: You(pl.) who fear the Lord, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.
Eventually God did not despise or abhor him. Jesus and all his disciples praised him. His crying was heard. God rescued him among the dead.
From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him. The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord! May your hearts live forever! All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.
What did you see in Psalm 22. Please read this psalm again meditate on it in this evening. Jesus spoke this a thousand years before his suffering through the mouth of King David. “My God, my God, Why have you forsaken me?” “Eli, eli, lema sabachthani?” “I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!” And his crying was heard and responded. God rescued him among the dead.
Prayer: Oh our Father, we thank you for your love. You did not spare your one and only Son to deliver us from death and sin. Oh our Lord, we thank you for your saving grace. We remember your suffering and your crying. Cleanse us with your blood. And give us new life. Oh our Holy Spirit, we thank you for guiding us into the gospel of the Kingdom of God and giving us regeneration and sanctification. Please fulfill our salvation. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
