Day 1: Palm Sunday

When He arrived, people greeted Him with a famous ancient symbol of victory—palm branches.
Mark 11:7–8 NASB95
They brought the colt to Jesus and put their coats on it; and He sat on it. And many spread their coats in the road, and others spread leafy branches which they had cut from the fields.
Luke 19:37–40 NASB95
As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, shouting: “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!”

Day 2: Holy Monday

He taught in the temple of Jerusalem
He shared parables that used simple imagery to explain the kingdom of God
Jewish Leaders become angry
The Jewish leaders thought he was being blasphemous by doing so and questioned him (Matthew 21:23)
Matthew 21:23 NASB95
When He entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him while He was teaching, and said, “By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?”
He walked through the temple,
Jesus became angry that the holy place of worship had become a place for
buying and selling and
taking advantage of the poor
In his zeal, he overturned tables, enraging the vendors (Matthew 21:12-16)
Matthew 21:12–14 NASB95
And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’; but you are making it a robbersden.” And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them.
Then he spent the evening with his friends Lazarus, Mary, and Martha (Matthew 21:17)
Matthew 21:17 NASB95
And He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there.

Day 3: Holy Tuesday

Jesus is the Son of God and He knew it
Jesus continued to publicize His message by teaching parables in the temple
The parable of the tenants in particular (Matthew 21:33-44) depicts a dramatic and even violent reflection of Jesus’ eventual sacrifice
an assignment from His Heavenly Father
Matthew 21:33–44 NASB95
“Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard and put a wall around it and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and rented it out to vine-growers and went on a journey. “When the harvest time approached, he sent his slaves to the vine-growers to receive his produce. “The vine-growers took his slaves and beat one, and killed another, and stoned a third. “Again he sent another group of slaves larger than the first; and they did the same thing to them. “But afterward he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ “But when the vine-growers saw the son, they said among themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.’ “They took him, and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. “Therefore when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine-growers?” They said to Him, “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and will rent out the vineyard to other vine-growers who will pay him the proceeds at the proper seasons.” Jesus said to them, “Did you never read in the Scriptures, ‘The stone which the builders rejected, This became the chief corner stone; This came about from the Lord, And it is marvelous in our eyes’? “Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people, producing the fruit of it. “And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.”
Jesus also addresses
the end times,
the kingdom of God,
the hypocrisy of those who claim to fear God, and
what to expect when the Son of Man comes.
In each parable, He speaks with certainty and gravity.
Once again, Jesus’ authority to teach in such a way is questioned.
This time, the chief priests seek to arrest Jesus after sensing He is speaking against them (Matthew 21:45)
Matthew 21:45 NASB95
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they understood that He was speaking about them.

Day 4: Holy or Spy Wednesday

Spy Wednesday is Used by some Roman Catholics
Associated with the betrayal of Jesus Christ by Judas Iscariot
The term "spy" reflects the idea that Judas was acting as a betrayer or informant
Matthew 26:14–16 NASB95
Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?” And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him. From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus.
In Today’s Market, 30 silver coins would have been roughly equivalent to 10 ounces of silver, a spot valuation would be worth approximately $303 to $441
Plans were set in motion to capture Jesus and kill Him.
In the words of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year,
John 11:50 NASB95
nor do you take into account that it is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”
The Previous Saturday Jesus is anointed by Mary at Bethany,
with an expensive jar of perfume that
Jesus later suggests is a preparation for His burial.

Day 5: Maundy (MAAN-dee) Thursday

Maundy comes from the Latin mandatum (MAAN-day-tum),
where we get the word “mandate” (a word much more familiar to us).
The mandate, or command, in question is Jesus’ command that His followers love one another
John 13:34 NASB95
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
The Last Supper,
The washing of the disciples’ feet,
Judas’ swift exit from the table
The early church made Jesus’ new command the namesake for Maundy Thursday.

Day 6: Good Friday

Then went and Prayed at Gethsemane
When He finished praying
Judas betrayed Him with a kiss
Turn with me to Luke 22:63-71
Luke 22:63–71 NASB95
Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking Him and beating Him, and they blindfolded Him and were asking Him, saying, “Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?” And they were saying many other things against Him, blaspheming. When it was day, the Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their council chamber, saying, “If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe; and if I ask a question, you will not answer. “But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” And they all said, “Are You the Son of God, then?” And He said to them, “Yes, I am.” Then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”
Jesus with those who captured Him
Hasn't gotten to His pretrial yet and already being persecuted.
That night the men began to mock and strike Jesus
They Smote him which is to give a blow with the                  hand, or fist or a weapon
Then mocked Him in an abusive way
Then the religious elders of the day gave Him
a pretrial before sending Him to Pilate.

Jesus is before Pilate

Mark 15:1–14 NASB95
Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate. Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him, “It is as you say.” The chief priests began to accuse Him harshly. Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, “Do You not answer? See how many charges they bring against You!” But Jesus made no further answer; so Pilate was amazed. Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. The man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection. The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. Answering again, Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” They shouted back, “Crucify Him!” But Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!”
As we know Time of Passover
It was the custom to let a prisoner go
Explain Custom
Pilate thought they would pick Jesus
Yet they pick Barabus whose name meant
Comparison of Barabus and Jesus
The Son of a earthly father vs. The Son Heavenly Father
Violent Insurrectionist vs. The Prince of Peace
A taker of life vs. A giver of Life
Yet Jesus own people who were praising Him as He rode in to town on Palm Sunday were now shouting Crucify Him.
Lets continue on by reading Vs
Mark 15:15–22 NASB95
Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified. The soldiers took Him away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they called together the whole Roman cohort. They dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him; and they began to acclaim Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They kept beating His head with a reed, and spitting on Him, and kneeling and bowing before Him. After they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him. They pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and Rufus), to bear His cross. Then they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.
He was physically abused again
this time by the Roman Soldiers
They Scourged Him
Very Brutal
Many died during this
Striped and Bound with arms above head
The Flagellum (cat of nine tails)
Ends of metal, bones, glass, and were                    usually barbed
Would grasp the flesh catch it and pull             back
Literally tearing His flesh
Jewish law stated 40 lashes only
Not Roman Law as many as they want
Every 2 on back 1 on the front
Remember Jesus was beaten so badly He would later fall under the weight of the cross
Mocked
Purple Robe of king
Crown of thorns
2" in length; very sharp
sun rays possible implication
Royal Scepter
Which they beat him with
Lead to Golgotha

The Crucifixion

Most painful and cruel form of capital punishment
Victims carried own cross beams
During march wooden verdict wrapped around                      neck and nailed above Cross
Jesus died for our Crimes which were nailed to the cross
Colossians 2:14 NASB95
having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Spikes through hands and ankles taking away support leaving constant pressure
Lift up to breath until to weak and could lift to breath and slowly suffocated
Jesus went through this for you and me , yet see His              response
Luke 23:33–38 NASB95
When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves. And the people stood by, looking on. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One.” The soldiers also mocked Him, coming up to Him, offering Him sour wine, and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!” Now there was also an inscription above Him, “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
Father forgive them
Never have I seen such love
They Continue to mock him even on the Cross
Mark 15:33–39 NASB95
When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour. At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, “Behold, He is calling for Elijah.” Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.” And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last. And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
Darkness from noon to 3
Universal Darkness
Dionysius the Areopagite, claims to have observed a great darkness from Heliopolis an ancient city Egypt at the time of the crucifixion.
Phlegon of Tralles in his Chronicle wrote of a Great Eclipse as never seen before near this time
We don't know how it was done but we do know
it was not eclipse it was from God
Explain Passover held on a full moon of  Jewish month
To the Jew Darkness symbolizes a curse or Judgment of God
Amos 8:9–10 NASB95
“It will come about in that day,” declares the Lord God, “That I will make the sun go down at noon And make the earth dark in broad daylight. “Then I will turn your festivals into mourning And all your songs into lamentation; And I will bring sackcloth on everyone’s loins And baldness on every head. And I will make it like a time of mourning for an only son, And the end of it will be like a bitter day.
To the Gentile It could be showing Gods Power over their Sun Deities
Soldier Saying Surely this was the Son of God
Then at that dark moment God Turns His back on His Son
Christ Cries out in a loud voice
Eloi Eloi Lama Sabach tha ni?
Mark 15:34 NASB95
At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
With vs 37 in John 19:30
John 19:30 NASB95
Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
He yelled IT IS FINISHED!
Paid in Full
Then Luke 23:46 tells us He said, "Father into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus He gave up the ghost.
But then something marvelous happened
what does it say READ vs 38
Mark 15:38 NASB95
And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
The Veil was 60 ' long 30' wide palm of mans hand thick
300 men put it up
