Welcome back to our Easter devotional. This is day 2/7 and today I want to draw your attention to another imporant historical event that we see in the Bible - The Last Supper which was followed by betrayal.
Yesterday we spoke about the Triumphal entry and how Jesus is not the king people expected but the one that they needed.
Today, we are looking into the Last Supper. The story is recorded in the synoptic gospels. Let’s start with the reading together:
Luke 22:14–23 NIV
14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.
The Passover meal commenmorated Israel’s delieverance from Egypt. Exodus 12 gives them a specific instruction on how to follow.
It is usually a family meal, but here - we see the disciples and Jesus sitting alone
Jesus, becoming the perfect lamb, has redefined it, showing that he was the ultimate sacrificial lamb.
There is no salvation with sacrifice.
There is no sacrifice without the blood.
And there is no blood without Jesus.
3. When we look at the feeding of 5 thousand, we see Jesus speak about the elements: I am the bread of life, Whoever drink from my cup will never be thirsty
We as christians celebrate the Last supper every first Sunday of the month.
This is not an empty ritual that we do, for each element has meaning
Lesson: The disciples have witnessed a redemptive story that the Father has planned. The end result was for God’s people to once again be reunited in this covenant.
His body - takes on our sins
HIs blood - rescues us from death
