Passage Questions and Notes
Luke 22:14 “And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him.”
Reclining at table in the presence of God
Wright: Had you known the hour of your visitation
Luke 22:15–16 “And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.””
Doubled desire, Jesus has felt an urgency about this meal and has set his mind on its occurence before his suffering
Notice the shift towards fulfillment. The Passover is not a historical remembrance but a present anticipation. There is a meaning here that has not previously been announced.
This is the 5th time the word Passover has been used. Luke is putting the death of the lamb front and center
Luke 22:17–18 “And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.””
Is this the same cup or a different cup? Why is it mentioned?
What is the significance of dividing it among themselves? Prior to the institution? Matt 15:36?
What does it mean that he will not drink?
Luke 22:19 “And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.””
The bread of agony is Christ’s own bread. His own breaking under slavery, that they might eat and be filled. (For he gave them plenty).
What does memory mean?
Luke 22:20 “And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.”
