Jehovah Rapha (also spelled Yahweh Rophe or Jehovah Ropheka)
Jehovah Rapha (also spelled Yahweh Rophe or Jehovah Ropheka)
Meaning: “The Lord Who Heals”
“…for I am the Lord who heals you.” – Exodus 15:26
Healing is one of the basic fundamental character traits of God
God healed in the OT
God healed in the NT
God healed in the early Church
and since God never changes
Malachi 3:6 “6 “For I, the Lord, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.”
We can testify that God still heals today!
somebody say AMEN!!!
Matthew 10:7–8 “7 “And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.”
{1} The Biblical Basis of Healing
{1} The Biblical Basis of Healing
Key Verses:
Exodus 15:26 – “I am the Lord who heals you.”
Isaiah 53:5 – “By His wounds we are healed.”
James 5:14-16 – “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders…”
1 Peter 2:24 – “By His wounds you have been healed.
Key Point:
Healing is part of the atonement and God's covenant with His people.
It flows from His character as a compassionate Father and Deliverer.
a. Prophetic Foundation – Isaiah 53
a. Prophetic Foundation – Isaiah 53
Isaiah 53:4–5 “4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.”
The Hebrew word for “griefs” (ḥolî) can also be translated “sicknesses.”
The word for “sorrows” (makʾōḇ) can mean “pain.”
“By His stripes we are healed” points to physical and emotional healing as part of the Messiah’s suffering.
b. Jesus Fulfills Isaiah – Matthew 8:16–17
b. Jesus Fulfills Isaiah – Matthew 8:16–17
Matthew 8:16–17 “16 When evening came, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: “He Himself took our infirmities and carried away our diseases.””
Matthew quotes Isaiah 53 directly and applies it to Jesus’ ministry of healing—not just spiritual forgiveness, but literal healing of physical illness.
c. The Whole Gospel: Body, Soul, and Spirit
c. The Whole Gospel: Body, Soul, and Spirit
1 Thessalonians 5:23 “23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Jesus died to redeem all of us—not just our spirits for heaven, but our minds and bodies too.
The cross touches every part of our brokenness.
d. Atonement in Action – Forgiveness and Healing Linked
d. Atonement in Action – Forgiveness and Healing Linked
Psalm 103:2–3 “2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits; 3 Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases;”
James 5:15 “15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.”
These verses show that forgiveness and healing often go hand in hand—both flow from the grace Jesus purchased through His death and resurrection.
{2} Examples of Jesus’ Healing Ministry
{2} Examples of Jesus’ Healing Ministry
Highlight Stories:
There are approximately 26–30 distinct healing events recorded in the four Gospels
over 70 references to Jesus healing people
John 21:25 “25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.”
Blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46–52) – Faith activates healing.
Woman with the issue of blood (Mark 5:25–34) – Persistence and personal encounter.
Paralyzed man lowered through the roof (Luke 5:17–26) – Healing and forgiveness intertwined.
Ten lepers (Luke 17:11–19) – Gratefulness brings wholeness.
Key Point:
Jesus healed physically, emotionally, and spiritually
often connecting healing with faith, forgiveness, and compassion.
{3} Jesus Sends His Disciples to Heal
{3} Jesus Sends His Disciples to Heal
Matthew 10:1 “1 Jesus summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.”
Luke 10:9 “9 and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’”
Key Point:
Healing ministry was not just for Jesus, but commissioned to the disciples and then to all believers
Mark 16:17–18 “17 “These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.””
{4} Pass on What They Had Learned to the next generation
{4} Pass on What They Had Learned to the next generation
Matthew 28:18–20 “18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.””
Key Point:
The disciples were not only called to experience healing ministry but also to teach others to walk in it.
This includes passing on Jesus’ authority, model, and compassion.
So let me ask you? are you Jesus’s disciple?
If so healing, both giving and receiving are for you!
But what about when we ask for healing and it doesn’t come?
Let’s be honest we’ve all been there.
some of us still are!
Does it mean if we ask for healing and it doesn’t come....God no longer heals today?
All we have to do is use an exmple of modern healing and that shows the questions is “No”
But instead of putting it up as an absolute failure on God’s part
maybe let’s consider if there are other reasons why the healing did not come.
{5} Why Healing Can Be Hindered (And How to Overcome It)
{5} Why Healing Can Be Hindered (And How to Overcome It)
a. Unbelief or Doubt
a. Unbelief or Doubt
Mark 6:5–6 “5 And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And He wondered at their unbelief. And He was going around the villages teaching.”
Solution: Build faith through the Word and testimonies
Romans 10:17 “17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”
b. Unforgiveness or Bitterness
b. Unforgiveness or Bitterness
James 5:16 “16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”
Solution: Lead people in prayer of release and forgiveness.
c. Unconfessed Sin
c. Unconfessed Sin
Psalm 32:3–5 “3 When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away Through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. Selah. 5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”; And You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah.”
1 Corinthians 11:29–30 “29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. 30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep.”
Solution: Gentle confession and restoration.
d. Timing & God’s Sovereignty
d. Timing & God’s Sovereignty
Not all healing is immediate.
Some comes progressively.
Healing at the gate beautiful
Acts 3:2 “2 And a man who had been lame from his mother’s womb was being carried along, whom they used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, in order to beg alms of those who were entering the temple.”
Question: How many times did Jesus walk past this lame man?
The Bible doesn't explicitly say how many times Jesus walked past the lame man at the Gate Beautiful,
but based on the context, it’s very possible that Jesus passed by him multiple times and chose not to heal him—yet.
The temple was a central location in Jesus' ministry.
Jesus visited the temple often during His time in Jerusalem (see Luke 2:46, John 2:14, Matthew 21:12).
This man had likely been begging there for many years.
Jesus likely passed by this man—yet didn’t heal him
Given:
Jesus often entered the temple through its gates (including during feasts and His final week).
The man was there daily, and had been lame from birth.
Therefore, Jesus would have seen him, yet left him unhealed
not out of indifference, but because God had appointed another moment for his healing to bring maximum glory.
Why? God's timing and purpose
Why? God's timing and purpose
The healing through Peter and John right after Pentecost was:
A sign of the Spirit-empowered Church continuing Jesus’ work.
A setup for Peter’s sermon, which led to thousands being saved (Acts 3–4).
A demonstration that Jesus' authority now operated through His followers.
Powerful Takeaway:
Sometimes, God delays healing not because He doesn’t care,
but because He has a greater plan—a moment that will result in greater impact, greater testimony, and greater glory.
“Not yet” doesn’t mean “No.” Sometimes it means, “I’m saving this moment for something bigger.”
Solution: Trust God’s process and keep praying Luke 18:1
e. Lack of Compassion or Authority
e. Lack of Compassion or Authority
Healing is not a formula but flows from love and understanding our delegated authority.
Matthew 14:14 “14 When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.”
Solution: Teach identity in Christ and cultivate love for people.
f. Lack of Persistence in Prayer
f. Lack of Persistence in Prayer
James 4:2 “2 You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask.”
Luke 11:9–10 “9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 “For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened.”
Healing can often requires contending in prayer, not just a one-time request.
Overcome it by: Continuing in faith-filled intercession, fasting, and not quitting.
g. Lack of Knowledge
g. Lack of Knowledge
Hosea 4:6 “6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.”
Many believers don’t know healing is part of God’s covenant promises.
Some were taught healing ceased after the apostles (cessationism).
many beleive this out of personal experience instead of biblical understanding
Overcome it by: Studying God’s Word, renewing the mind, teaching sound doctrine.
h. Demonic Interference
h. Demonic Interference
Mark 9:29 “29 And He said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer.””
Some illnesses or afflictions are the result of demonic oppression or generational curses.
Epilectic
Matthew 17:14–18 “14 When they came to the crowd, a man came up to Jesus, falling on his knees before Him and saying, 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a lunatic and is very ill; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 “I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him.” 17 And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18 And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured at once.”
Some illness are domonically empower but have the appearance of a physical sickness
Overcome it by: Deliverance ministry, fasting, and declaring Jesus’ authority.
i. Emotional or Psychological Barriers
i. Emotional or Psychological Barriers
Trauma, fear, self-hatred, or deep emotional wounds can block healing.
Some people feel unworthy or ashamed to receive healing.
Overcome it by: Inner healing, pastoral care, and the love and truth of Christ.
j. Testing of Faith
j. Testing of Faith
James 1:3 “3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.”
Just as Job suffered while remaining faithful, some are tested through long-term illness or delay.
As with Job its a test...not a life sentence!
Overcome it by: Enduring in hope, praising through the pain, and trusting God’s process.
k. Not Asking Others to Pray
k. Not Asking Others to Pray
James 5:14–16 “14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”
Sometimes people suffer in silence, missing the power of agreement in prayer and the authority of spiritual leaders.
Overcome it by: Reaching out for help, inviting community and spiritual covering.
